University of Florida CALS Applicants (Fall 2015) Transfers

I noticed there was no thread for CALS students. So here is one :smiley: if you’re not sure what CALS stands for it is UF’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences. Let’s talk about stats and decisions to get a general idea.

Hello, I applied to UF on March 1st. They say not to apply early, because a majority of the decisions happen towards the end of the school year.
GPA: 3.2 Preprof GPA: 3.6
CC: IRSC
Major: Animal Sciences (CALS)
College of Agricultural and Life Sciences

Anyway, around April 2nd my status changed to, “Your application has been referred to your college for a final decision.” I contacted the dean for my college major. She told me that CALS decisions deadline for transfer is July 15th. So anyone who applied to CALS should receive a decision before that date. My question is, is there anyone who has a CALS major that has been accepted???!!! I’m still waiting to here back. Thanks

What’s the point of creating a thread if no one replies?

Have some patience man, don’t expect people to respond to you right away. Not everyone is transferring to CALS, plus, there are two other transfer threads in full swing right now. A lot of people tend to miss these new threads because of the other active ones, you might get a quicker answer over there.

GPA: 4.0
PreProf GPA: 4.0

of Prereqs: All completed

Current college: Santa Fe
Major: CALS Biology medical preprofessional.

All transcripts received by Feb 2nd. Awaiting CALS for a final decision. I hear CALS is one of the last colleges to respond.

@2015CalsApp I know it sucks… :frowning: I need to know whether I can sign my apartment lease or not. Let me know when you here back, and I’ll do the same :slight_smile:

:slight_smile: I will be sure to let you know if my application status changes. Good luck!

You too!!! And wonderful Stats :smiley:

HEY HEY HEY!

I have been checking in “on and off” to see if a thread like this has been started!

I have applied for the “organic crop production” degree at CALS, I applied for the fall.

Im not really a strong student…I have slacked off/lacked motivation for a lot of my college career until I found this major…(please dont make fun of me…Im a late bloomer…I am also humble…)

I have a 3.3 GPA
I go to Palm Beach State
I had 9 prereqs to take still when I applied.

I dont really know what my prereq GPA is. I cant immagine it being lower than 2.0 but I doubt it is higher than a 3.0

I really hope since the GPA requirement for organic crop production is low (2.0) that they wont be too hard on me for such a poor display…I have like 5 w’s and 3 F’s in various classes.

I know that competition for this field is very low, but the field is growing in demand since there is a larger public interest in organic produce.

long story short…I am a simple dude with fairly poor grades (poor for a university like this one) but the program requirements are low…I have no clue what my chances are…any one have an idea?

Thanks, I look forward to talking more with you all!

From what I understand, CALS has a minimum GPA just to weed out applicants that have too low of grades to be accepted. You’ll make it past that first round of weeding out if your GPA is above that 2.0. After that, admissions will look at your application to see how competitive it is against other applicants. If your field isn’t very competitive like you said, you may have a better chance.
Here’s a link of CALS admission statistics for the past couple years for you to check http://cals.ufl.edu/circ.php

Thanks for the reply!

So from the data you shared with me, there are 56 students in the horticulture program…is this typical of a low competition admission major?

and, lets say my fears are true and I DON’T get in…how does reapplication work? Do they really care if i take a few classes related to my major to boost my GPA?..how does that work?..once they deny you admission is that it? the “ship has sailed” so to speak?

@angioDAN
When I checked the Horticulture data for Fall 2014 and Spring 2015 (just to see the most recent data), I noticed there was a 0% admittance rate for Fall 2014 and a 6.66% decrease for Spring 2015. However, this could mean the competition is so low that more people are graduating from the program than are being accepted. If this is true, then your chances would be better.
As far as reapplying goes, you can reapply every semester until you graduate if you want. In the transfer application there is a a section that asks if you have applied before and for what term. I applied during my senior year of high school but was denied, so I’m reapplying now. I called the admissions office and asked if saying I had applied before would hurt my chances, but the lady said it could actually only help because it will let the University know I’m serious about wanting to attend. In other words, it will separate me from other applicants that had never applied to UF before because they know that if accepted I will be attending, whereas the others may have applied to multiple Universities and may not end up attending UF.

@UFVet0822

Ahh…thanks for the insight! You seem to know your stuff!

I have lots of factors that may be hindering me from acceptance, I am really hoping the person who reads my written portion of the application can sense the genuine desire to learn at the university.

@angioDAN
Thanks! I thought maybe I’d grow to enjoy the university I’m at, UCF, but it just isn’t for me. UF has been my dream school since middle school so the first rejection was difficult, but I’m working really hard to get there!
What’s great about the transfer application is that you really get to explain who you are and what you are trying to accomplish instead of trying to outdo the other applicants with lists of leadership roles like in the freshman application. The person who is reading your written answers should be able to tell you have the motivation to succeed even if past grades weren’t the best, which is incredibly important since UF uses the Holistic admission process (50% of the decision is based on your GPA and test scores, and the other 50% is based on your written portion, involvement, leadership, community service, etc).

@angioDAN I think you’ll not have any difficulty getting accepted with your GPA just you need to have all of those pre reqs completed before the fall term. If you applied with 0 done that would hinder your chances more than anything else would. Last year I emailed w/ them about transferring for that major (before deciding to stick with CLAS) and they said that’s the most important factor. It should only be Bio 1 and 2, Chem 1, Precalculus/Trig and any physics class even the liberal arts one - only those need to be done before you would start and you need to have at least a C in each of them. They’ll let you take stats, technical writing and your economics courses after you transfer if you don’t have them done already.

Thanks both of you for the heads up. I feel much more relaxed… still nervous in the back of my mind, the anxiety kills me sometimes but what college student doesnt know that feeling lol.

I was debating on calling the admissions offices to really get down to the negative acceptance rates…but I think UFvet is probably right about less applying that graduating

I wish I knew if I was accepted Already!!!

So they recieved my final transcripts with my degree posted as well. Has anyone else finished their AA? Anyone hear back yet? This wait is killing me…

@angioDAN Just found your post. My son is also applying to the same major, Organic Crop Production, and his girlfriend has applied to Forest Resources and Conservation. They both have their AAs from Eastern Florida State (Brevard) and should be done with all pre-reqs in time. I am hoping they both get in, since they would be moving to Gainesville together. I will try to post their status if they get in or not. I hope they don’t have to wait until July! Good luck to everyone.

I really don’t want to have to wait until July… I still have to move in…
