You don’t need your AA if you have 60 transferable credit hours, however each college has certain pre-req courses you have to have completed (or will have completed) by the semester you plan on transferring. This means you will need to have 60 transferrable credit hours by Fall 2016, but included in those 60 hours you must have completed MAC 2311, CHM 2045 w/ lab, CHM 2046 w/ lab, BSC 2010 w/ lab, and BSC 2011 w/ lab. While animal and cell bio will help your application stand out among the rest, you do need to complete BSC 2010 and 2011 with labs.
This is direct from UF’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Biochemistry major required prerequisite section: https://www.advising.ufl.edu/admissions/transfer-admissions/#ChemistryBiochemistry
“Complete MAC 2311, CHM 2045 w/ lab, CHM 2046 w/ lab, BSC 2010 w/ lab, and BSC 2011 w/ lab. Must typically have a minimum 2.5 overall GPA to be competitive. Must typically have a minimum 2.75 GPA on all attempts of these courses to be competitive. However, the most competitive applicants have also completed either the physics or organic chemistry sequence and have B’s or better in all of the courses that apply to the major.”
One last thing to keep in mind (I’m only bringing this up because you said you won’t have your AA so I’m thinking you’re at a University) is that UF will not allow you to transfer into a major that is already offered at your school. For example, I am at UCF right now and wanted to transfer into the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences as a Biology major, but because UCF offers a biology major I wasn’t allowed to. I picked Animal Science instead because UCF doesn’t offer it (which I’m much happier with anyways). So if you’re at a 4-year University just double check they don’t offer Biochemistry or else UF won’t allow you to transfer into it.
They won’t let you transfer unless the major isn’t available at my university here? even if it’s out of state?
Also, if you don’t mind me asking, do you know what BSC 2010 and 2011 are? Because at my university the first two biology courses we take are animal and cell biology and then we take plant and evolution so which one of these should I have taken?
Also, do you know if i would be able to switch majors once I get into the university if I change my mind? Or do I have to stick to it?
I would call UF to check on the out of state question. I just know that when I called to ask a question about my application one day the person on the other end told me I couldn’t transfer into a major that is already offered at my University.
As far as switching majors, I asked the same question before applying. As a transfer student, if you are accepted into one major and you decide you want to switch, you have to entirely reapply to the University for that new major the following semester and forfeit your acceptance.
This is from their website:
“You will be required to pursue the major to which you are admitted and graduate typically within two years if attending full-time. If you have decided not to pursue the major to which you are admitted, do not enroll. Contact an advisor in the major/college to which you want to pursue admission and reapply for the next available semester by the deadline for that major.”
BSC 2010 and 2011 are Biology 1 and Biology 2. I’m not sure why your university would require you to take animal/cell biology before general biology unless that’s just what they call it. What are your university’s course codes for animal/cell biology and plant/evolution biology?
@gator24 Sorry for being late… I transfered with 78 credits… But I had to start with courses like College Alg. And Trig. … In general, they already accepted more courses than I expected… Programming 1&2 are the big ones Im waiting for…
@ashxxch
Yeah, unfortunately UF usually doesn’t let you change your major, once you transfer… Also, UF doesn’t have grade forgiveness, so check with the dept where you transfer to see if they even accept make up grades… (As long as you didn’t fail)
Animal biology is biology 012, thats what I took the first semester and I did fine, not great, I got a B plus. I took biology 11, cell biology, last semester and got a C. I am planning on retaking it the spring semester of my second year. I will be taking plant biology, biology 13 next semester, which is going to be my sophomore year.
I didn’t too well my first year, mostly because my school is private and they don’t have the best biology department. They try to weed people out and also make them lose their scholarships so they can make money. On top of that, I got into two accidents and had a lot of family problems going on as well. So I have valid reasons as to why I wasn’t able to get good grades. I wouldn’t think its fair for them to not give me a chance, because the things that were going on affected my performance in school. Do you think they will let me retake if I tell them that?
I know if I get rejected I am going to be writing an appeal letter explaining my grades and my performance. If anything, I am going to apply to UCF and USF. But I really wanted to go to UF, although it looks like that isn’t going to be a possibility for me.
@ashxxch BSC 2010 and 2011 are general biology 1 and 2. In your case, Cell bio and plant bio. The same thing just with a different name. If you are comming from a university you will be fine as long as you have 60 credits. No need for an AA unless you are in a 2 year college.
I dont know why @UFVet0822 says you cant transfer into a major your university already offers. Maybe thats true for out of state students but it wasnt in my case (in state). I applied to the civil engineering program and I got accepted even though my university also offers it.
@wendyyy0207 either way, I don’t think I will be able to get into the university as a Biology BS major since thats one of the most competitive ones. My grades are going to make it impossible and I can’t even retake one of the prereqs. I honestly love biology so I want to major in it and I want to go to medical school after my undergraduate. So thank you for your help.
@wendyyy0207
The person I spoke to made it sound like a general rule, but maybe the rule only applies to the college of agricultural and life sciences? I had to go through this whole ordeal changing my application and everything though so if it’s not true then I’d be a little upset.
hey guys so I just realized BSC 2010 and 2011 are both general biology courses and they don’t focus on just one subject. My university offers animal biology, introduction to cell biology, evolution, and plant biology as four separate courses that are more in depth. All of these are basically covered in BSC 2010 and 2011, I’m not sure how much they go into the subject at UF since I haven’t taken it but I know we use the same book just a later version. I looked at the syllabus for UF and I know they cover all those subjects in two courses. My question is what gpa will the school look at from the four classes? will they look at the average of all four classes?
I would ask UF but no one is picking up the phone or answering my email. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry I just need to decide what classes I should and shouldn’t be taking
This is the number to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Undergraduate Advising, the college that has the biochemistry major. I would call them for your questions because I don’t know enough about out of state transferring and don’t want to give you any wrong advice.

@UFVet0822 yes, that is probably the case. Maybe because CALS is one of the colleges with the most applicants.
Yes @ashxxch , you are correct. Bio 2010 and 2010 are general courses that cover what you said. I know UF looks at your overall GPA but they also look at the prereqs GPA. You need to try contacting them to clarify. OOS transfers are a little bit different. Try contacting an academic advisor in that major. They never answer the phone though, idk why. Keep sending emails to different advisors. Someone gotta answer
