University of Florida - Musical Theater

Does anyone have any insight into this program? It looks small, but is it good? Thanks

I hate to say this because my friend goes there

But its not

And thats weird too because they have a great classical voice program and their acting program is alright

but their MT is... well.. subpar

FSU rocks!

University of Florida and Florida State University are 2 different schools. The first is in Gainesville and the second on Tallahassee.

UF has a small MT program. They only accept a few students each year and rely in no small part on their MFA candidates. They'll do one or two musicals each year (last year was "West Side Story" and then they did "Mikado" but I believe the latter was under the auspices of the Music School side) but both shows were very well done.

Here's what you need to know about UF: it's a great academic school that has a very large student population and a dynamic college town atmosphere. It is becoming more and more selective but is a tremendous bargain if you are a resident of Florida and can qualify for the state's "Bright Futures" scholarships. My wife and older D are UF grads and my younger D (currently at BTP) will be junior there. She's pursuing a BA in Theatre and will also go for a BA in Business and was in both "West Side" and "Mikado" last year and did shows at the community theatres in Gainesville and Ocala (about 30 minutes from UF) during her freshman year.

If you are interested in attending UF, email me and I will provide you with additional information. UF at this point is not regarded at the level of either FSU or Miami as far as MT programs go but academically it's a fantastic place to spend four years.

I'm a "Gator", also. I was able to declare residency after my freshman year and shaved thousands of $$$ off my tuition. Don't think they let you do that now, though.

Any current info on University of Florida MT program?

Reading through the old posts, I don’t think much has changed. It is still a very small and selective program. They only take about 4 kids per year. We researched them last year when D was going through the audition process and encouraged…well, almost begged…her to audition there because my husband and I are both alumni. After she looked into the MT curriculum, facilities, performances and alumni success, sadly she ruled it out and didn’t audition. The curriculum is on the heavy side as far as core class requirements and she didn’t want that. I will say that if you are in-state, UF is one of the best values in education out there, no matter the degree. It is very competitive academically, and you must get accepted academically in order to be accepted for the MT program. GO GATORS!
