I have a tough choice between UF and Michigan. My major is undecided. I live in jacksonville, Florida so I have in-state tuition for UF and would actually end up getting paid. But at michigan it would cost me about $ 40,000 a year. What do you think? Is it worth it?

In a word, NO. If you were OOS state to Florida and costs were not too far off, then for sure I would recommend Michigan. I would never go into debt for $160,000.00 to attend any school, unless I had no choices to attend a good one within my state. Florida is at least a very good school. Best of luck to you!

Probably not worth it unless you want Ross and it’s ridiculous recruiting benefits.

jman, if your parents are well off an can afford it, I think it is worth it. But if Michigan will present a financial burden to your family and/or yourself, I would definitely go for Florida.

I would stick with Florida too especially since you are undecided about your major. I would spend much less $$ at your very good state school while finding yourself. Also enjoy that much warmer weather. :)

University of Florida is one of the best public schools in the nation, even though it isn’t as good as UM. Other states’ residents (coughnebraska*cough) don’t have such a good school in state and thus we search elsewhere. I’d go for UF.

Save your money for graduate school and go to U of Florida!

I think I’d have to go with Florida on this one.

We are from FL, and D2 went through this difficult decision a couple of years ago. Our other D1 stayed instate and has been happy with her choice, but her school is very strong for her major. For my younger daughter, U Mich very clearly had the superior program and research opportunities (plus the Residential College). Programs she knew she wanted that the instate schools didn’t equal or have. We’re not wealthy, but we’re managing the OOS tuition and feel it’s worth every penny for the experience she’s having at Michigan.

But every situation is different. If you don’t have any idea of what you want to study or the OOS tuition will be a hardship, go to UF. It’s a bit more difficult to navigate than Michigan, but once you find your niche, it can be a great school…especially for bio research and pre-med. UF is great also if you plan to stay in Florida…nothing beats the Gator network for FL business/law connections (though I know plenty of 'noles or Canes that will jump in and disagree). However, if you want to develop a more international network, Michigan really has that. No matter where we travel overseas, if my D is wearing her hoodie…people will stop her on the street and gush about how great Michigan is.

The best thing to do is make the list of pros and cons, then see if it’s worth the extra tuition.
