University of Florida or University of miami??

UF or UM?? is university of florida really that dangerous?? or is it not as bad as alot of people say

UF dangerous? since when?

UF and UM are both good (comparatively) schools. I'd personally go to UF because it is a lot cheaper and practically free if you are in-state.

yeah im not sure its worth the extra money for miami....there is a serious commitment to that school in south florida though (alumni etc).

whichever one is cheaper for you

when she's asking if it's dangerous, i think she's talking about when that sicko ted bundy whacked those chicks at UF .

I am familiar with both schools. Academically, they both are similar. However, as someone noted above, Univ of Miami has a huge and serious alumni base in South Florida. It is much easier to make connections, get jobs and internships etc. with Miami. I also think that Miami has more choices in majors than Florida; however, this may have changed over the years.

mcp1187- Ted Bundy killed at FSU. It was Danny Rolling at UF. In neither case can you say the university is "dangerous". Those crimes could have happened anywhere.

well theres also been some rape cases at UF, but i those things happen at alot of big state schools (and private I may add), regardless of academic caliber.

I taught at UM the last two years...it is a great place to do undergrad, especially if you want a more rounded liberal arts type education. Plus, Miami can't be beat as a city. I grew up in California and Miami has such a different cosmopolitan feel then city's like New York, LA or San Francisco. UF certainly has more majors than UM. UF is a fantastic research university...I would say if you were more interested in research based fields, getting a position as an undergrad in a good lab, then maybe UF's the way to go...if you're unsure, then perhaps UM. As somebody else said earlier, if you plan on staying in south florida (Dade/Broward Counties) then you can't beat UM for networking possibilites. Also, if you plan on anything in the marine sciences, then you can't beat UM. Football is a draw! Though the two schools will play a home and home starting in '08.

Go Canes!

CUgrad

CUgrad, what do you think of the business major (especially finance) at Miami?

the two main major at UM is archetecture and medical, right?
or am i wrong...

Football's not a draw... Miami would slaughter UF.

If only they would bring Butch Davis back. Those were the glory days. It was always "how much is Miami going to win by, 14, 21?"

UM has a number of strong programs in business, law, medicine, and marine biology, just to name a few.

I'd pick Miami unless money was a significant issue.

I wonder what it'd be like for UF grad trying to get a job in Miami/Ft. Lauderdale >:]

I think florida would have pasted the canes in football this year (didn't LSU beat them by 40?). The best programs I know of at Miami, by far for undergraduates are the marine sciences program and music. They probably have the best undergrad marine program in the country with absolutely incredible research opportunities (I knew of an undergrad who did research in Antarctica...imagine that). There jazz program is second or third best in the country. I don't know much else...I was in biology, which is decent, but not great, but is getting better. There has been a major overhaul recently with old faculty being forced out and new, young faculty doing cutting edge research being actively recruited. If tropical ecology is your thing, it is very good, as is mathematical ecology and modeling.

Cheers,
CUgrad

CUGrad (LOL, they REALLY tried to get my son to go to Boulder as we live in Lone Tree and he was top 2% in his class),

How is Miami's Comp. Sci. dept.? S has decided to go to Miami and major in C.S.

Thanks

Florida got pasted by Alabama... who lost to LSU.

But again, Florida pasted Florida State, who beat Miami

I guess it would come down to where the game was. If it was at the Swamp, i'd say Florida. At the Orange Bowl, Miami.

But the Canes will win the NC this year. Bank on it. So much talent coming back.

A2Wolves6

I would love the Canes to win it all this year...but it won't happen. Too much movement of personel in the off-season, and their offense is still woeful.

jdmcool...the CU here stands for Cornell, but I love Boulder. I have a couple of friends who went there and say absolutely wonderful things about the university.

Miami's engineering is decent--not great, but O.K. UF has good engineering, but not so much better than Miami as to make it an easy choice. Between those two schools, it's really a matter of personal taste. I would take Miami just because I like the city and the school itself more than UF...

cheers,
CUgrad

I live in Orlando... I HATE Gainesville. I was born at Shans on the UF campus and lived in that part of Florida for a year... I would never willingly go back up there. The drives to and from home would drive me crazy. Way too "southern" for my tastes.

Coral Gables is just beautiful...
