<p>As the presidential candidates pledge to expand service opportunities for young people, some University of Florida students arent waiting around to see if the promises are fulfilled.</p>
<p>The Peace Corps reached a 37-year high in volunteer numbers this year. The surge was fueled in part by an increase in volunteers from UF, which saw the number of students nominated to the program more than double from 2005 to 2007.</p>
<p>Students are also joining domestic service programs such as AmeriCorps and Teach for America. Some see the popularity of such programs as part of an emerging volunteer ethos in young people, instilled through community service requirements in high school and reinforced by a variety of opportunities in college.</p>
