University of Florida vs University of South Florida for Premed- Biology

Hello everyone,

I applied to both USF and UF for an undergraduate in biology- premed (or something in that manner) for the Fall. Yesterday, I discovered that I was accepted to USF. I have yet to hear from UF. In the even that I'm accepted to both, which one do you suggest would be better to attend?

If my personal info has any bearing on your decision, I'm a sixteen year old girl.
moving on...

My goal is to complete med-school and become a psychiatrist

I always wanted to go to USF because it's a nice school and really current looking. UF is-- well-- "UF" and it's like the top school in the state. The alumni is prominent also.

thanks in advance!

Have you visited UF?

Do you qualify for Bright Futures?

Is one school a lot farther away from home?

Will you have a car at school?

Will you be 16 when you start college?

Are both schools equally affordable?

They’ll both be fine for pre-med, so the decision may depend on other issues.

Have you visited UF? - Neither

Do you qualify for Bright Futures? -75%

Is one school a lot farther away from home?- UF is farther

Will you have a car at school? - No

Will you be 16 when you start college? - Yes

Are both schools equally affordable? - About the same

They’ll both be fine for pre-med, so the decision may depend on other issues.

THANKS FOR THE SUGGESTIONS TO CONSIDER

The fact that you won’t have a car at school may matter if you’ll want to come home a few times per semester. Have you talked to your parents about how you’ll get to and from school?

I’m concerned because you’ll be much younger than the other students and you may not have as much to do on weekends because of that. Will you be 17 shortly after classes start?

Do your parents have a preference?

Well, I’d planned to stay on-campus in a dorm. I’d like to visit a lot but I’m not sure how I’d be able to without a car as you pointed out. I’ll be 17 in October.

My parents havent really done any major research and left it up to me. I think they both just don’t want me a million miles away. So, my best guess would be that they’d prefer USF because its only 2 hours away, while UF is 4.

Do you that there’s really no difference in academic quality between the two schools, in which case it wouldn’t really matter which one i go to?

The academic quality is probably a bit better at UF.

What is the situation at USF? Are many students commuters or do they go home on weekends? If so, you may not like that when many go home for the weekend and you’re left behind.

Talk to your parents about the transportation issue for when you will come home. A 4 hour distance is at least 8-9 hours when dropping you off and picking you up. If you have a desire to come home - say once a every 4-6 weeks - then an 8 hour trip twice over a weekend could be a major obstacle for your family…unless at some point they get you a car.

However, for a full college experience, I would choose UF.

I see. Thanks for all the help. I’ll wait to hear back from UF and then talk to my parents about it.

Personally, I think you’d be happy at either place.

At this point you should have hear back from UF. They were posted online on February 11th and acceptance letters arrived about a week later.

Yeah man, UF came out with decisions almost a month ago…
