To my (limited) knowledge there is no official definition for Reach/Match/Safety…

“A reach school is a college that you have a chance of getting into, but your test scores, class rank and / or high school grades are a bit on the low side when you look at the school’s profile.” Getting into a reach is something you can depend on, but if it happens, great! Because you’re not likely (50% or less chance) to get into a reach school, you should always pick a few match schools.

“A match school is a college that you are pretty likely to get into because your test scores, class rank and / or high school grades fall right into the middle range when you look at the school’s profile.” Because you’re not 100% sure of getting into your match school(s), you should pick one or two safeties.

“A safety school is a college that you will almost certainly get into because your test scores, class rank and / or high school grades are well above average when you look at the school’s profile.”

Every one has a different spin on these rules…For example, if I think you’re in the middle 50% (GPA/Test/etc) of the class its a match(great EC’s may make it a low match, while poor EC’s may make it a high match)…If you’re above the middle 50%(the top 25% of students)…it starts to become a safety; if you drops below the middle 50%, into the lower 25%, it’s a reach to low reach…drops below the lower 10% to 5%…its a high reach…Others use different criteria.

In your case, your GPA is below that middle 50% of class range. In my mind, that drops your chances and since GPA is the most important criteria at UF(out of many they use), that makes it a reach (if your test scores where below the middle 50% ranges, but your GPA was high, then I may have said it was a high match). Your ECs and other stats improve your chances, so lets say low reach. Hundreds of students with your GPA (or there about) will be made offers, however, a lot more in that GPA range will be denied.

At the end of the day, we’re all making guesses, and with UF’s holistic admission process, we have a fairly high level of uncertainty with our guesses! The more “holistic” the process, the more random it can feel.

Anyway! Please apply, if you get accepted great! If not, make sure you’ve applied to other “matches” and safeties" and I’m sure you’ll end up going to the right school. It usually all works out for the best. :)
