University of Florida

Wondering what people might think of my chances at getting into UF. I have been told I have a good chance, but honestly feel like I don't have as great of a chance

UF GPA: 3.6
SAT combined: 1950
AP World score: 4
AP Lang score: 3
APUSH score: 4
AP Psychology score: 4

taking 4 AP classes my senior year

varsity swim team for 4 years, eagle scout, first chair viola in symphony orchestra at school, on the school's mock trial team, employed as a lifeguard, approximately 100 community service hours, varsity letterman, and member of NHS. Application essay was reviewed by three teachers and I think it was very strong.

Do I still have any slight chance at getting accepted even with my relatively low GPA?

UF is a low reach. You’re GPA is a problem. Your SAT score is fine (it’s about average for the Freshman class), and your EC’s are great. With a good essay you have a shot.

If your school doesn’t offer many honor AP classes, then UF would lower it’s expectation around your GPA. It’s a lot easier getting a weighted GPA over 4.0, if your school offers plenty of honor/AP/DE/AICE classes.

Good Luck!

thank you

Would the fact that my transcript shows improvement over time make any difference? Freshman and sophomore I was getting some B’s and C’s but then started getting mainly A’s and a few B’s (in all honors and AP classes)

I think you have a good shot. Your GPA is the weakness of your app, but it’s not without of reach. Your SAT’s are strong, it’s good you took so many AP’s (and did well!), and your EC’s are very good. You say your essay is good, so I will take your word for it! Of course that cannot hurt.
And also, strong letters of rec are very important and helpful. Make sure the teachers that write yours:
-love you
-remember you well
-are knowledgeable
-preferably don’t write too many letters of rec (because then they will focus more on yours)
-YOU DID WELL IN THEIR CLASS!! This is key! Make sure you not only did well grade-wise, but you behaved.
anyways, I think you’ll get in  go Gators!!

Showing improvement does matter, as does your heavy class load Junior and Senior years. What’s your class rank? if it’s fairly high, that can compensate a bit for your GPA. You have everything in place (test scores, class rigor, EC’s leadership and essay), except that annoying GPA :)

You have a shot, Good Luck!

Well this is pretty relieving to hear. And I’m around the top 20% of my class

Are you out of state or instate? If you’re instate you may have more of a chance, but at the same time, only priority is given to top 10% for Florida students. As for the GPA, it’s considered really low. avg. UF gpa is 4.2. I’d say low reach.

I am in state. And by low reach, does that mean like a long shot?

Oh, ok. I’m not sure now whether that would help you or not because your GPA is below, but being a Florida resident helps a little.

Far reach is like virtually no chance. Reach is inbetween. Low reach means it is a little harder to get into that high match. Match is after, then comes low match, which is a little harder to get into than safety.

To my (limited) knowledge there is no official definition for Reach/Match/Safety…

“A reach school is a college that you have a chance of getting into, but your test scores, class rank and / or high school grades are a bit on the low side when you look at the school’s profile.” Getting into a reach is something you can depend on, but if it happens, great! Because you’re not likely (50% or less chance) to get into a reach school, you should always pick a few match schools.

“A match school is a college that you are pretty likely to get into because your test scores, class rank and / or high school grades fall right into the middle range when you look at the school’s profile.” Because you’re not 100% sure of getting into your match school(s), you should pick one or two safeties.

“A safety school is a college that you will almost certainly get into because your test scores, class rank and / or high school grades are well above average when you look at the school’s profile.”

Every one has a different spin on these rules…For example, if I think you’re in the middle 50% (GPA/Test/etc) of the class its a match(great EC’s may make it a low match, while poor EC’s may make it a high match)…If you’re above the middle 50%(the top 25% of students)…it starts to become a safety; if you drops below the middle 50%, into the lower 25%, it’s a reach to low reach…drops below the lower 10% to 5%…its a high reach…Others use different criteria.

In your case, your GPA is below that middle 50% of class range. In my mind, that drops your chances and since GPA is the most important criteria at UF(out of many they use), that makes it a reach (if your test scores where below the middle 50% ranges, but your GPA was high, then I may have said it was a high match). Your ECs and other stats improve your chances, so lets say low reach. Hundreds of students with your GPA (or there about) will be made offers, however, a lot more in that GPA range will be denied.

At the end of the day, we’re all making guesses, and with UF’s holistic admission process, we have a fairly high level of uncertainty with our guesses! The more “holistic” the process, the more random it can feel.

Anyway! Please apply, if you get accepted great! If not, make sure you’ve applied to other “matches” and safeties" and I’m sure you’ll end up going to the right school. It usually all works out for the best. :)

Thank you, and I have already been accepted into FSU, UCF, and USF, but UF is my first choice (if I get accepted)
