University of Georgia staff member found to have embezzled $1 million+; dies by suicide on campus

I have been treasurer for several organizations, ranging from the road association on our road with 13 houses all the way up to our church with a large annual budget. Without exception, I am SHOCKED at how little attention organizations pay to financial matters. When I was asked to be treasurer at our church, I was surprised that not a single audit had been performed in the church’s 15-year history. I told them I would take the position only after an audit was done. Nothing untoward was discovered, but the auditor made quite a few suggestions about how things could be handled better.

I used to get very nervous before annual meetings where I needed to present a treasurer’s report. Then I realized nobody even cares. No one asks any questions at all. :frowning: I can see why it’s so easy for people to embezzle money.
