University of Hawaii at Manoa

Do they have any GE's or pre-reqs required for junior level transfers? Im applying from city college, I don't know much about U of H since I just started looking into the school. Also, the application is a little weird. Theres no personal statement or essay portion, am I missing something?

Don't go there. The school has a mediocre reputation on the mainland and the students are unfriendly to non natives.

I am from Hawaii and UH has a good reputation in some things: marine biology, oceanography, geology, asian studies, etc. It really depends on what your major is. I came in as a freshman and I didn't need an essay/recs either. They're pretty liberal with accepting transfers (most of their incoming students are transfers not freshmen).

lol, I don't think we're that "unfriendly to non natives"... I agree with abby. It depends on your major, but if you're also looking for "bang for your buck", UH is a pretty good financial deal.

From what I’ve heard (coming from students who are currently attending), there is very lax atmosphere within the classroom. IF you are a student who cannot stick for yourself and try hard, and easily influenced by the atmosphere of the school, you should look elsewhere.

Professors are alright, education is mediocre, but that is no reason not to go. If you are very lax and don’t want a “study hard” college experience, this is the place for you.

I live in Hawaii, and I feel like I can say this with authority: many local people are racist. Simple as that. I’m not saying they all are, but quite a few are…so with that in mind, like everyone else said, it really depends on your major.
I, personally, wouldn’t recommend it though.

Talk about mediocre, the advice about UH on here is a little silly to say the least.

UH has some issues, but so do a number of “State Schools”, I would argue that your education at UH is what you make of it.

If all you care about is cruising with a 3.0 and getting out with a bachelor’s, then yeah, UH is a pretty lax environment. That said, we have a number of good professors here at UH, and they will push you to better yourself if you actually show interest.

The difference between a 3.0 and 4.0 in the amount of work you will have to is pretty substantial, and there are plenty of options to get honors distinctions when you graduate.

The surrounding area really can’t be beat. Top notch beaches, snorkeling and hiking can be found within 5-10 minutes from campus.

The biggest problem with UH IMO, is aging infrastructure and misguided priorities from administrators on where to spend money on improvements.

Are there students at UH that just cruise by? Sure, but you show me a mid-range State School that doesn’t have that. If people haven’t been paying attention, these happen to be problems all over in higher ed.

In regards to people being racist, I actually disagree. While there are some tensions that exist as a result of Hawaii’s colonial history, ever-reaching military presence, most people are friendly and courteous. When people have problems it is because they choose to remain ignorant about Hawaii’s history and act accordingly. Carry yourself properly, don’t be judgmental and have RESPECT and you will be just fine.

^Not necessarily. Racism manifests itself in more ways than just rudeness. Try telling my white friend who was told she wasn’t going to be hired because the store was looking for people with a more ‘local’ appearance that people aren’t racist. She’s lived here since she was 7, and most people consider her to be local, but since she was white, she couldn’t get a job.
I have dozens more examples, but I don’t feel the need to list them. Like I said, not everyones racist. Many of the people I’ve met here have been some of the most amazing, friendly, generous people I’ve ever seen, while with others, it doesn’t matter how informed and respectful you are.
Every experience varies however.
