G.P.A - 3.1
ACT-27
School doesn't offer AP but have taken tons of college classes through dual enrollment program.
Probably in top 40 to 50% of class
Live in Michigan

Does anyone think it would be wise to go to the University of Hawaii. I wonder if it would be wise to go their for one year for the experience. It isn't considered a top school and I probably could get into better schools but what do you think of my chances of getting in and if it would be smart to go there.

It would be helpful to know what your aims are major-wise.

I personally have UH:Manoa as my first choice school, simply because I plan on majoring in Japanese.
UH has wonderful programs in Asian languages, not to mention the fact that it has an extremely large Asian population and is relatively close to Asia. So, if you have any long-term aims in that regard, go for it!

I don't think that you'd have too much trouble getting in, only 2.8 gpa is required.
I don't know much about ACT scoring, so here is an excerpt is from UH:Manoa's admissions FAQ.

"The SAT requirement is 510 Writing, 510 Critical Reading, and 510 Math. The ACT requirement is 22 English, 22 English/Writing, 22 Math, and 22 Composite. (Under review, subject to change)"

I want to do microbiology and also learn japanese at the same time. That is why I thought that it might be a nice place to go for a year, because it also has a large asian population. I would prolly then transfer to U of Mich. The only thing I am worried about is their dorms I hear are run down and some of their buildings are too. I also hear the islanders treat the mainlanders bad, and since I am black I don't think that I would be treated very nicely by the japanese. Though I do hear it is just as bad for white people.

I have also heard the exact same things that you are worried about. I think that regarding the islanders' demeanor, if you're nice to them, they should be nice to you. Can't say much for the housing/buildings, but as long as you have a roof over your head, it can't be that bad. It's college! You don't want to be inside all day anyway, especially if it's Hawaii.

From what I can tell, you have two choices:

Go to UH for a year, then transfer to U of Mich.

Go to U. of Mich.

I think that either decision could be a good one. Going to UH could help you "ease-in" to college, and you probably would be able to get a lot of your GE's out of the way. Going straight to U. of Mich. could get you acquainted with professors/friends faster, and let you not worry about having to move to a different college.

What I would do would be to wait for the acceptance letters, and if both accept, weigh the pros and cons at that time. In the end it's up to you, but as I said before, either choice could give you a great set of benefits.

No matter what is said about the college I can't just get over it is in Hawaii. While I do plan on doing some intense studying, living in Hawaii would be an invaluable experience.

I'd say you have a good shot. Oahu is a nice place to live. The school however, is far away from the Beach, but they have buses to Waikiki etc. Good luck
