University of Houston or UNLasVegas?

Hey Guys,

I really need some help! I've got accepted by the hotel programs in University of Houston and University of Nevada-Las Vegas and I need some input!

Anyone can tell me more about the programs, schools and the surrounding areas in general? Like in terms of quality of life, etc.

Thanks much guys!

David

Never been to U of Houston but UNLV is beautiful. The campus is very high tech and vey hot.

The area near UNLV is sketchy--- I'm talking about just east of Maryland Parkway-- lots of apartments -- and Swenson Road to the west--same thing. The campus itself is fine. Cost of living is low in Vegas--- all those buffets, two for ones, etc. I don't know anything about Houston but UNLV is one of THE top hotel administration schools in the country and the internships and connections are probably fabulous.

are you from Houston?

Um... what part of UNLV is beautiful? Lol. Just wondering in case I missed it...

UNLV has one of the best hotel programs in the country (being in the entertainment/sin capital of the world). Surrounding area is not the best but could be worse... Quality of life in Vegas is dry weather, pretty cheap and easily attainable food, and many many many casinos (duh).

Don't know much about University of Houston.

wow Houston. I am from there and have PLENTY of friends that attend UH. Its a huge school that covers a big portion of mid town houston. Its a commuter school so there isnt a lot going on campus at all. EVERYONE is a UH student in Houston so you wont feel left out. Houston is an amazingly cheap big city with tons to do. If you can land a decent job that pays 8-10hr, work about 30-35 hrs a week, then you would be rolling in the dough in regards to how much a buck can go far in Houston.
UH is in a bad area though called Fifth Ward, so I would be off campus by 8pm if I were you.

ya i have heard that UH does not have a "college feel". seriously, almost EVERYONE is Houston goes to UofH. Some people live on dorms on campus, but most people have apartments or still live with their parents. i have heard there is not a sense of community, but that is just what I have heard. There are tons of resturants in Houston where you can find a job. good luck! and the weather is awesome if i do say so myself. some might say it is too hot or humid, but the humidity does wonders for your skin. haha, its true. the weather in houston has a tendency to change a lot. in the morning it will be 50 degree, pouring rain, and by the afternoon there is not a cloud in the sky and its like 75 or 80. also, last year a week before christmas i was wearing a bathing suit outside. you MUST, MUSTTTTT have air conditioning or you will seriously die. its so hot.

I like UNLV more personally. Las Vegas in an awesome place to be in and the professors at UNLV are very good from what I heard.
But it's your choice.

You cannot beat Las Vegas when it comes to choosing between H-Town and Vegas. But I would tire of Vegas with it being such a small town and all. And how much money do you have to gamble? Are you a high roller and can dish out money every weekend going clubbing? Not worth it. Houston is a far better city to make a buck and go to school at the same time. I could never do this in Boston, NY or even LA. Get two roomates and share a SWEET townhome in midtown, go part time to school, get a decent job, buy a used car and live it up beyond what you can do in most major cities. NO CONTEST. Clothes, cars, food, rent is amazingly cheap by comparison. I wouldnt keep repeating this over and over again if I didnt know. (I live up north now and miss the weather and the insanley cheap stuff).
People are also kinder. They will respect you going to school and holding down a job. Up here in the north, if you dont go to an ivy or a rich private, you better get to the back of the line. There isnt as much competition in the south because everything is so cheap that everyone has everything that everyone else has. No lie, a person with about a 13 an hr job working full time can afford a really nice apartment and a used camaro, bmw, GT Mustang, Lexus, or whatever, and STILL having spending cash leftover to deck out his apartment. This is the typical life in Houston, TX. Screwston, TX.

Las Vegas housing is also cheap comparable to other cities. You can rent a really nice 2 bedroom apartment for $800-900 month in a complex with a pool and other amenities. Find a roommate.

The weather during the school year is not as hot as you think. The winter nights can drop below freezing and there are a few snow sprinkles sometimes. You'll definitely need a warm winter coat.

so Vegas is cheap too? Well then I would rather be in Vegas considering the cheap housing and the weather. But whats the average pay in Vegas? I have heard its significantly high.

hi guys

thanks for all the feedback. no one seems to know how good the UofH hotel program is though? I hear it's got a strong faculty as well? actually im an asian international student thats why i'm wondering about all these factors, having not been to any of these places before!

i think ultimately i will go to the school with a stronger program.

thanks

dave

They're both tops for hotel programs. Cant go wrong either way. Both are two of my favorite cities.

U of H has one of the top resturant and hotel management programs in the country. that is what I have heard at least. sorry, that probably does not really help. but i am from Houston and many people rave about the program.

UNLV ranked #1
UofH ranked #3

Would one city have better internship/after college employment opportunities than the other?

Closing this thread as it’s over 2 years old and the OP is no longer around.

Please, it’s great to dig up old threads for information, but don’t post on them and bring them back to life, it confuses other members into posting as they think it’s current.
