University of Houston: Tier One Scholarship

To: b0902206
Thanks so much for sharing the info on Tier One program at UH. Please let me know the types of interview questions at Tier One Day. What are the questions like? Thanks for the help…

Are Tier One Scholarship interviews conducted in person or over phone?

@AllenTx15 They are conducted in person from what i understand in small groups. I am wondering if you can share the process for the biomedical sciences if you know, i.e. when and how to apply or how they know the applicant is interested?

@CorpusChristi Honors Biomedical Sciences is a great program for those who are interested in health careers. They are given personal advise with research and internship opportunities to prepare for medical school applications. Few for the top students in program are guaranteed medical seat when they join as long they maintain GPA.

But unfortunately the deadline has passed. You have to submit application for HBS. I think deadline was December 7th. You can check this link for more information http://www.uh.edu/honors/Programs-Minors/honors-minors-programs/health-professions2/biomedical-sciences/

We are still waiting for invite They only pick few people to program

@AllenTx15 Thanks for the info! I guess we missed the boat on that one but that’s ok.

@AllenTx15 My sibling has applied to the HBS program. I am wondering when the date for the invitation to the program is given?

@CorpusChristi . Your daughter got invite for Tier One Scholarship. She must have great credentials. She will do good in any program she joins. Good Luck with her interview and college search.

@2150Loser, I don’t think they have sent any invites yet. I have sent an email last week and someone responded they will contact once the review is done. No specific dates are given. We are also anxiously waiting for the invite. Has your sibling applied to UTSA FAME or Baylor/Baylor? Please do post if your sibling gets an interview. Good Luck

Hello My daughter just received acceptance to Honors program. She thought that UH selects students for HBS from Honors group. Is that correct? Did you specifically apply for HBS Major separately?

@hoping2017 My Son received Honors admission too last week. HBS has a separate application. I believe you have to apply. There were 6 to 7 short essays / personal statement that you have to submit along with the application. In the first week of December he also got invite to apply from HBS department director. Did your daughter check email for invite?

Thank you @AllenTx15 . I guess we blew this one. She did not receive any invitation for applying HBS. She says since admission into Honros is a requirement to get into HBS, she thought she has to wait until she got the acceptance into honors, which she received Saturday. We now went to HBS page, which has the application, but it says it is expired. I guess it’s our mistake to not to reach out or ask the question earlier, as to how to apply for HBS without getting the admission in the first place. Feel sad though, as she is NMSF and all that, strongly hoping to get into HBS. This is a costly mistake.

Question: You said you got the invite to apply from HBS in Dec 1st week, but I read you got admission into Honors last week. Were you still able to apply for HBS even before you got the admission into honors?

@hoping2017 Yes, My son called Honors college and asked if its on invite basis or can he apply as the deadline was Dec 7th. They said to go ahead and apply. He got the invite the same week he submitted. I think there was no requirement to wait for Honors admission to be complete. I understand it can be confusing. I am sure she can still take advantage of program being as an honors student. My son is very interested in their direct med program, that’s why he was keen on it. Did you daughter apply to UTSA FAME? Is she interested in Medicine?

Yes, she has her mind set on medicine, and was very interested in HBS - 3/4 program.
I believe at one point of time HBS was only invite based, and HBS web page did not have application link on it back then. She had the same information in her mind. So, she applied to UH and UH Honors by Nov 15 deadline(although towards close to the deadline). She has received Academic excellence few weeks ago. We weren’t even aware of it, because we thought NMF would cover full ride(tuition and boarding) as it used to cover until last year. Apparently few changes happened this year which includes limiting NMF to only 4 yrs of tuition. Since we didn’t suspect HBS requirements have changed, we did not go to that web page to specifically check one more time. Do you recall by any chance when was the first time you saw the application link on HBS page? I remember HBS was based on invite only at one point. We were still under the impression that honors admission would put us in the list for HBS, and UH will send the invite for some people. This morning, we went to HBS page just as a routine, and we found application link there. Yeah, she is sad :frowning:

No, she did not apply for UTSA FAME. Thanks for taking time to reply by the way.

@hoping2017 I am sorry to hear about the confusion. I am not sure, but it was for sure available mid November. My son applied around the same time as your daughter. Since honor school was insisting on having application by Nov 15 for scholarship. My son also got the AES of $8000 / year max that is currently allowed, but since he is NMSF we are expecting full tuition. Tier one scholarship is better. It gives 2 years of living expenses too.

With her credentials she would be successful in any premed program she joins. Good Luck to her.

Hello @AllenTx15. Have you been able to gather what do they ask in Tier One interview?

@hoping2017 . Not much. It appears more general questions like academic challenges they faced. Some kids had their personal interview last weekend.

Thank you. We have one upcoming. Couldn’t get much info on forums as to what do they ask or look for.

Great thread. Tough to find UH info here on CC. My son was accepted to the Honors College and received an AES award of $4,500/yr, and because of that award he qualifies for in-state tuition. So the scholarship really amounts to over $19,000 per year. Its a great deal. We are going down from NYC for Honors Open House and Engineers admitted student’s day in late February. I really hope S likes it. At this point its our best financial deal…even better than our in-state SUNY.

S has been at UH for 3 semesters, in his 4th now. Honors Colllege. Got invited to apply Tier 1, but didn’t get scholarship. He loves it. Fully immersed in college life, great friends, now into his major more, and finding courses rigorous but enjoyable. Second S has just interviewed for Tier 1. Got invite to apply to HBS, but not his area of interest. Invite only arrived two days before cut-off of January 15 tho. Suggest you contact College, and explain circumstances. Always worth a shot.

Tier One scholarship recipients were notified on February 28th. This is an awesome scholarship and the UH staff did an excellent job during the interview process. My son was fortunate enough to receive one and he is so excited. What financial relief! Thank you UH!!!
