I’ve been admitted into the school of business at UIUC and I’ll be attending there soon. But I would like to see if I could change my major to some kind of engineering major. Would it be possible for me to change my major to engineering before I start physically attending the school? Also, I’ve heard some talk about not being able to transfer back into the school of business later if I were to transfer out of it. Would the same apply if I were to successfully change my major before attending the school? Thank you so much in advance!
You have this posted in a Univ of Calif thread, you should change that. But from what I understand, it would be difficult to transfer into engineering if that is not the major you applied under
It’s not easy to transfer into the COE, but it depends on the major. Some are only moderately difficult but some are extremely difficult.
Under current rules, you cannot make a change from the business college to another of the UIUC colleges now, and cannot make a change to enginneering until entry into sophomore year or a semester later than that, depending on major… Moreover, to make that transfer at end of freshman year, you will need to complete, by end of freshman year the typical math, physics, and chemistry courses taken by freshmen in engineering. In other words, if you are serious about changing to engineering, you need to have a serious conversation with any advisor appointed to you for freshman orientation. Moreover, as far as the business college accepting transfers from any of the other UIUIC colleges after you have started at UIUC, be aware that the business college takes no such transfers except fpr those sought at end of freshman year. So if you were to start in the business college now and switch to engineering to begin sophomore year, you will thereafter not be able to transfer back into the business college
Let’s see, transferring between CoB and CoE at will…not going to happen. Changing one’s major before starting school from one point of view is changing your application and asking for a reconsideration of the admission decision, you know? An applicant is pretty much bound by the ranked major selections on your application; the applicant can’t take an admission to first choice and then say, I really want choice #3 after the fact-the admission analysis stops once the applicant is admitted to a chosen major. So, if you’re admitted to #1, they don’t even look at lower choices. Lots of students change majors and even colleges, but the paths and chances aren’t all the same…some changes are hard to make. As drusba stated, ICT transfers into CoB have a limited window. Applicants don’t even find out until June whether they’re in for the fall. I agree that you need to get direction from your orientation advisor. I’m also thinking of freshman year courses, and if you needed to fill in elective spots with possible engineering requisites for transferring, while taking required courses for CoB, I wouldn’t even want to look at that schedule, and don’t forget, you need to kill it on the grades. I don’t mean to be a downer, rather be realistic- all-around success freshman year should be leaving you tired - and fulfilled.
