I tried talking to a select few people who I thought could help me explain the difference between the majors offered at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign but I'm still unclear about it. If someone with insight can enlighten me with the difference between the computer science major in the school of engineering and the stats/math computer science major offered in the school of Liberal Arts and Science. The most common response I get when I asked this question was that the LAS major is more math heavy but regardless of being math heavy or not, would I take the same courses in either sub-school? Would a Math/Stats CS degree from UIUC land me a solid programming job in the future? How difficult is it to transfer from LAS to the school of ENG?

If you take Computer Science in the School of Engineering, you will have to meet the requirements of the College of Engineering in addition to the requirements of the Computer Science major (you will have to take some classes in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering Sciences, and Multivariable Calculus or Differential Equations).

In the LAS math/stats track, I am guessing that you will have to take some additional courses in Math and Statistics, which may be useful if you are interested in computer science theory. Both degrees are from UIUC CS and should get you a solid programming job.

It is not hard to transfer from LAS to ENG. You just have to get a 3.0 or 3.2 gpa (I don’t go there so I don’t know). It is probably definite if you meet the minimum stats.

I cannot give you advice as to the difference between CS eng and CS LAS directly. However, I would advise you to take a look at the web pages and cirriculum differences. I could imagine that you’d be better off getting a CS ENG degree because the UIUC engineering college is very prestigious… not so much LAS.

As to transferring from LAS to ENG, it shouldn’t be to hard. I came in undecided LAS and transferred to EE. Not sure about CS, but EE you can talk to the advisory department and they can give you permission to take ECE classes. Just be sure to do well in the classes they allow you to take. My Intro professor happened to be the chief advisor. They pulled up my transcript, made sure I did alright in the math and science classes I had taken, and let me in. They did even look at the “required” essay I put time and effort into making.

UIUCfinest: Were you a true freshman when you were admitted into UIUC or were you a transfer student?

I was a true freshman when I was accepted into LAS.

What is your overall perception of UIUC? Would you ever consider transferring out? How is the campus and the college atmosphere and ambiance?

I love UIUC. The combination of both a party/big ten school and a top engineering program. I coudn’t see myself transferring out because I couldn’t see myself at a school that lacks a social scene like MIT, Stanford, etc. I wouldn’t have it any other way. They only thing that bothers me are the cold winters but I’m used to that because I’m from Chicago. The only place comparable is UMich but they also have cold winters and they’re a disgrace. lol Muck Fichigan.

I am a senior in computer science at UIUC and I would highly suggest that you transfer into College of Engineering.

CS in College of Engineering is a lot more flexible than CS in LAS. If you truly love math, you can always choose Math concentration within CS curriculum. CS in Engineering is more selective, and you benefit from all resources of College of Engineering. Lastly, CS in LAS reads Bachelor of Science in Liberal Arts and Science, not Bachelor of Science.
