I was recently accepted to UIUC’s Mathematics and Computer Science major within LAS and was hoping to hear a little bit more about the program from a current student. What are the differences of this major vs Computer Science within Engineering? Are the career outlooks similar to those of Computer Science within Engineering students? Anything else I should know before committing to Illinois for this major? Thank you so much.
I don’t think this is the best place to look for current students as this site is devoted to HS kids college search. Don’t UIUC have any student ambassador program or can you contact the dept? Maybe you will be lucky and a current student who happens to have you major will turn up, lol.
However, you can easily compare the curriculum yourself. And fyi, other colleges with this type of division, notably Cornell, report similar job outcomes for each separate college for CS. My own kid studied math/cs in a dept not in engineering. She went to grad school but her fellow students had great job placements.

You can also contact the Computer Science (or Math) Department directly and ask them to hook you up with a student to talk with if you can’t make it for one of the admitted student visit days. There are a few extra LAS requirements (extra year of a Language and different Science courses), but the main CS courses are the same and it is a double major afterall so it seems to me that you would be very marketable and people jump at hearing CS from UIUC.
@Nickheyek I can tell you all the differences if you send me a PM
