University of Illinois UIUC Accounting chances

I'm going to be a senior in high school this upcoming fall and I'm considering accounting at UIUC because I know it is a top ranked program and very prestigious. I would like if anyone could tell me my odds of getting accepted to this program if my ACT score is a 33 and my weighted GPA is 4.3 (I don't know my unweighted) with 4 years of soccer 4 years of volleyball and work experience. Also, can somebody describe how to program works? I understand you apply to the business college, then pick a major after freshman year but do you have to apply to that program after freshman year or are you automatically admitted?

Thank you!

Correct that application and admission to business college is generic in that you do not specify a major like applicants do for the other colleges. In other words, your desire to be an accounting major is something for your essay but you are not admitted as an accounting major. With the business college, it is more like you gravitate to a major rather than wake up one morning and say this it. You don’t have to declare a major until after second year but most gravitate toward their choice by courses taken first and second year. You will have an advisor who might aid in the choice. As long as you remain in the business college you will not be denied pursuit of the accounting major but could be discouraged by an advisor from pursuing it if, for example, you get C- in both of your first two accounting courses.

Your grades and test score put you well within the business school’s usual range but that is no guarantee for being admitted. The business college is the hardest college to which to be admitted, usually accepting only about 40% of its applicants (many who are rejected are admitted to either LAS economics or Division of General Studies). It truly does a full file review and essays and ECs are important.

Yup, essays are really important. I got in with only a 1370 SAT (CR+M) and a 3.5 GPA (with 2 C’s junior year) so I think my essays were what helped me get in.
