University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign vs. University of Michigan-Ann Arbor

I am a prospective undergraduate student who has been accepted to both the universities. My major is Computer Science, and its really come down to picking between the two schools. I have visited both campuses, and really liked both. I have family around both places as well, so I need help deciding which one to go to. Really a tough decision for me, help would be great, thanks

Cost is not a factor, though I am aware Michigan is more expensive.
I'm also a sports enthusiast, and though historically Michigan is better at football, last year was a great one for Ron Zook's Illinois :]

Well if you are a sports fan I would say that Michigan is about as good as it gets in terms of prestige. But honestly both schools would be a great place to go and get a degree from, personally I would choose which ever school is the cheapest.

UIUC provides unique experience in CS with top notch facility. UIUC is the home to the National Center for Supercomputing Applications and Thomas M. Siebel Center for Computer Science is one of the world's most advanced computing habitat.

Michigan also has a very good CS department and has better overall reputation than UIUC.

I'd suggest that you visit both school and decide where you feel more comfortable.

i think u'll like michigan a lot. Michigan has good sports programs across the board, and academics of course are top notch. overall reputation, michigan is better. i think this is a rather popular dilemna, as they share very similar OOS applicant pool. I think Michigan will offer you more recruiting opportunities outside of technology. But in terms of engineering prestige, they are very similar.

same prob eith me. I am an undergrad junior transfer student and have been admitted into UIUC, U of michigan ann arrbor, and UT Austin. I am not able to decide as where to opt for. I am in comp science. So which will be the better option keeping all the things in mind? but i am not into sports ...i would like to have university which provides me better academic experience...

For CS, UIUC is edge over others. MS hires uiuc students the most.

As my dad was all-too-fond of pointing out, HAL 9000 was created at UIUC.

No, I know, HAL 9000 was a fictional computer.

No, he knows, too.

If location and cost are not factors, then I would give a slight edge to UIUC for CS, but Michigan has a slightly better overall reputation. I don't think you can go wrong either way.

thanks guys, in a nail-biting decision, i finally went with UIUC; it's funny because when my dad came here from india he attended University of Michigan, and at the time he really wanted to go to UIUC but didn't get in. (i know things have changed since then, but i have his satisfaction), but i suppose i couldn't really go wrong in either school. and besides, michigan's football team has a pretty dim future as of now :]

and their basketball days since the fab 5 have been fairly dim as well (hehe)

fighting illini!

In terms of CS, UIUC has a much better program and has one of the top CS programs in the US. Microsoft recruits more UIUC students than from any other school.
