University of Illionis or UC Irvine

I am a out of state student comming from Taiwan and I am paying out of state for both U. of Illionis- Urbana Champaign and UC-Irvine and im still deciding which one i should go to. For Illionis, I got in their Chemical Engineering department and for Irvine i got in their Electrical Engineering. My parents have no opinion because they wanted me to study Electrical Engineering but to them....Irinves EE is like the same as Chemical Enginnering at Illionis. I would like to go study Chemical Engineering but i heard from many people that Urbana is a boring place and I wont get enough "college exposure". I also heard that Illinois' program is harder to graduate out of.Yeah so what do you guys think? Should i go for school or major?

UCI won't give you a "college exposure" any more than UIUC would... UCI is a commuter school in the suburbs, and has very little school spirit. UIUC actually has a party scene and a residential campus. Plus there's the whole engineering reputation factor...

UIUC engineering is ranked very high -- on par with the best. UCI can't compare to UIUC. You are only a few hours away from Chicago, St. Louis, etc. and other major universities (i.e. Northwestern, Purdue, Indiana U., etc.). You will get more of a college experience going to UIUC than UCI -- UIUC is more of a typical traditional American university than UCI (i.e. campus town, football, basketball, frat., etc.). It also has a decent Chinese student body/org. UIUC campus can be compared more closely to UC-Berkeley's.

Flopsy... why you hating on every UC other than LA?!

Lightningdash... I've never heard of the other school... so I can't say much... but UCI is close to the beach, disneyland and is located in Orange County. The academics are pretty good... if you care about rankings... it's number 10 in all Public schools in the US... I think... good luck on deciding! If that illinois school is close to Chicago... then you will enjoy it :-)

I'd take UIUC.

Better engineering, more active/lively student body...

Of course, UCI weather >> UIUC weather.

Urbana Is Close To Chicago..
Irvine Is Close To La

If it means anything, UIUC has the largest Greek (fraternity/sorority) population in the world. Generally, a large Greek system connotes lots of parties.

Illinois has 10 times the "college experience" of UCI.

Did you apply to Cal or anywhere else?

Uci.............

In terms of college life, Irvine is definitely worse than UIUC. California is often a bit overhyped, and unless you're in a bigger city like Los Angelos (which Irvine is not) there isn't much more to do than anywhere else in America.

Trust me, I've lived in this state all of my life.

Uiuc......

UIUC is #3 in the country for EE

i like so cal but it is certain that uiuc is better school in my opinion and generally....

There is an article in today's Chicago Tribune about UIUC trying to raise its status as an elite university. They plan on cutting freshman admissions from 7500 to 6500 and raising the percentage of students in the top 10% of their HS class. They are also wooing more international and out of state students in order to increase the quality of the student body and attract more truition money.

Although these actions will be unpopular among Illinois students, they should help fight the negative image of it as being isolated amid the cornfields.

BTW, the closest large city to UIUC is Indianapolis, although the public transportation to Chicago is better because so many students come from that area.

UCI<3 okok..I love california growing up in NY but I have a crap load of family on the west coast including in LB(I DO NOT LIKE THE SHOW!)
right nearby...also iin LA and SD and i would take UCI over any college ne day
