My D got admitted via EA into UIUC for Chemical Engineering in the College of Liberal Arts and Science(LAS).. It is a bit confusing why it is not in the College of Engineering.
And just wondering how good the program is..? btw, we are living in NY tristate area.

In the above situation, Can any experienced professional please advise the best course of action to select which University is better if we get.? What are the chances into Cornell or UC Berkeley..?
Does the following priority list sounds ok.? (provided if accepted..)

1.UC Berkeley
2.Cornell University
3.Georgia Tech
4.UIUC (chem engg accepted in college of LIberal arts)
5.Boston University (if given money)
6.Case Western Reserve University
7.UCSD
8.UCLA
9.Stonybrook University (Seven Year Medical Program)
10.University of Connecticut (Honors program or 7 yr BS/MD program if selected)
11. UNC - Chapel Hill

Can anyone please share their suggestions/advice..?

I know UIUC is a good choice, though the others are good as well. At this point, you guys should figure out which schools are a better fit and if you can handle the financial aspects. I really doubt your D will have a tough time getting a job if they do well at any of those top choices.

Also, being a current UIUC student, I was told the reason ChemEng is in LAS is because they had that major before the official Engineering college was formed back in the day and they don’t want to give it up, in part since it is one major they can make money from since many want to do it. I don’t know for sure if this is correct though!

Aerokid1491, thank you for your response. She applied for Bio engg Major but was given the alternate choice as Chemical Engg in the School of LAS. Ranking wise is there a diff between school of engg and college of LAS…!?
And also you being the UIUC student, What choices you have if you need to go to chicago Airports…? I am trying to figure out the options of commuting. We live in NY/CT area.

Awaiting more responses with suggestions about the other choices… Seeking the expertise of exisiting students/ alumnis and any other professionals who have the insight into my situation explained as above. Thanks

UIUC is a top 10 school for ChemE, and UIUC has a biochemical engineering option. However, it seems pretty difficult to do premed at the same time in 4 years because there are so many ChemE requirements that there isn’t enough room for all of the premed requirements.

I’ve only been to UIUC once, to recruit at a career fair. (I’m an EE, but I researched this for my D who is studying ChemE). It seems like a terrific school with huge career fair.

To get there, you fly American to O’hare and change for a puddle jumper to Champaign. I’ve heard that it can be fine if you make your connection, but I didn’t and rented a car and drove the 2.5 hours. The way back was worse because I returned the car at Champaign before I found out about the delays. I missed my connection back too.

Yeah, the BME program at my school is extremely competitive because my University is trying to get the brightest kids to go through it and put our school at high rankings for BME down the road. In terms of the Engineering college vs LAS college, I don’t think you should really stress about that. I would pay attention to the ranking of ChemE, which as ClassicRockerDad expressed, is in the top 10.

I am an Illinois resident so I never use a plane, but a friend of mine who is from Texas explained to me there is a small airport nearby that your D could use to get over to O’Hare, just as ClassicRockerDad explained. It should be fairly easy to organize the trip back, though I haven’t done it so I wouldn’t know for sure.

At UIUC, bioengineering only admits a handful of students each year, partially because the program is so new and small (my freshman year in 2005 was like the first or second year it existed I believe). In other words, don’t feel bad for not getting into that. As Aerokid already mentioned, ChemE is in LAS partially due to tradition, but also partially due to convenience keeping it close with the chemistry and biology programs. When it comes I employers or graduate programs, they won’t care that its in LAS, they will just care that it is UIUC ChemE on the transcript.

As for school choice, all four of those top four are great schools. Assuming she gets into them all (a stretch with that GPA but who knows), then you should make a choice based on fit and price since the program quality is so high at all of them. How you weight fit and price relative to one another is your call.

I am not a professional just a mom with a DS that is going into BME and got accepted into GT in EA. He applied to other schools just not any others on your list ,we were looking for the best merit aid.
Have you looked at US New and World report rankings for BME? I know rankings aren’t everything however:
Georgia Tech is #2, Berkley is #10 and Cornell isn’t listed in the top 10.

Why GT is #3 on your list is because it’s in Atlanta? I could understand if that’s why honestly my husband works in Atlanta and I wish GT was in a college town. It’s just if you are going on rankings I would think it would have been above cornell. Anyway
I think your DD has a good chance of getting in GT RD.

The stat’s for EA at GT were:
“This years early admission student profile includes a 4.0 average GPA, 1460/2155 SAT score, with a predicted GPA of 3.3 after freshman year at Tech. Some 55 percent of applicants were accepted, 21 percent deferred and 21 percent denied; the rest did not complete their application files.”

So your DD’s SAT is in the range it was her gpa that was a little low. However the average gpa for RD is going to be lower so I think she will be ok.:)

Thanks a lot folks… Still wondering, about her possibilities of being accepted into
UC Berkeley,
GA tech (currently defered),
Cornell,
and with UIUC in hand…
If got admitted, which is a good choice…!? Also any insights into UCLA, UCSD, Case Western Reserve…?
BTW, she is competing in INTEL STS and yeterday, she was notified her entry is selected as ‘ENTRANT’… She is waiting to see whether she will be in the semi finalist / Finalist in the coming weeks. CAn we update the Univerisities about this progress.?! Will this be given the weightage in the admission process.?

I don’t know if you are aware, or for that matter if it makes any difference for BME, that the Cornell Medical School is located in New York, and not Ithaca.

I was accepted at Case Western Reserve (CWRU) for BME but scholarship ( and merit aid) was not that good meanwhile I also was deferred at Johns Hopkins (JHU) BME and JHU said if I would be accepted later the money would be small/limited. So, I chose Tulane for BME with full-ride. My HS GPA was 4.0 unweighted and Tulane has been very generous in giving away financial thing (merit aid, scholarship, grants, etc).

Speaking Case Western (CWRU), their BME is pretty good they dont give that much. So, if money is not your concerns then I would recommend CWRU as they are easy to get in.

Thanks folks… Would like to hear more… .on the possibilities on UC Berkeley, Cornell, GA tech.

PeterW, thanks for your info… Is it true Bio engg Undergrad program is with Cornell Medical School in NY… Wow… that would be nice…as we are closer to NY than Ithaca.

Hi MichiganGeorgia, glad and congratulations to your son for his acceptance into GA TEch. My D got defered and not sure whether she will get accepted that’s why i m keeping it as #3.
GA tech is a great school and as you said it is No:2 in BME next to JHU. Not sure whether she has the chance to get in… Let me wait and see. Do you think I should go ahead and submit the financial aid application immaterial of the fact she got defered…?

OP - Thanks. If you can I would. That way you know it’s done. DS is the oldest so I haven’t done the financial aid forms before. I would think it would be the same info for most places.
