University of Iowa or UCSB

I’m leaning towards the medical side for studying. I am most likely going to go into dental. I do live in Iowa, so I would be OOS for UCSB, but I hear UCLA, UCSD, and UCSF have very good medical programs. I just don’t know where to go.

I did some quick fact checking. Iowa has a population of 3.2 million (estimated); U of Iowa School of Dentistry is one of the top schools in the U.S. California has a population of 39.2 million (estimated) and has two outstanding public schools of dentistry at UCSF and UCLA. There are four other dental schools in California: Loma Linda U, U of the Pacific, Western U and USC.

OOS cost of attendance at a UC for undergrad is around $60K per year. There is no FA available for OOS people. Biology and other premedical majors are impacted, which means there are more kids than seats in the needed classes. Most California premeds end up going OOS for medical school, at immense cost, due to the lack of med school slots in state. Looks as if dentistry is a similar story. I like the odds in your home state a whole lot better for you. Good luck!

Thank you for the reply!

The U of Iowa is a fine school and you’d save something like $150,000 over four years. Unless UCSB offers a major you’re interested in that Iowa does not, I can’t imagine SB being worth $150,000 more. That money will come in handy regardless of post-grad plans, but especially if you are trying to pay for med school or really any other grad program.

Plus, as a Hawkeye you’ll have the honor of competing/cheering against my Badgers.

come on people your opinions matter!!!

please come to CA and bring your $100K in OOS tuition with you!
