I’m glad to see UK is still offering the Patterson Scholarship – full tuition for four years, and $10K housing stipend on-campus for first & second years – for National Merit Finalists and National Hispanic Scholars.
This is an amazing automatic scholarship.
Well worth a look at the competitive scholarships as well.
Fees have been insignificant. I don’t even remember them! I seem to recall $250?? the first year? First semester?
The biggest expense for us has been the full coverage health insurance ($2200?), and the taxes paid on the non-tuition part of the scholarship (taxes paid by the student, but at the parent’s tax rate).
You do have to pay taxes on the portion of the scholarship that does not cover tuition, fees and books. If the school is paying for room and board, that is taxable. In the past, a small portion of that would be taxed at the student’s taxable rate and the amount above would be taxed at the parent’s highest rate. With the changes in the tax code this year, I don’t know how that will be affected. Do plan on paying some taxes on the scholarship applied to room and board.
Why did you have to pay for health insurance? Are you saying you are forced to buy health insurance? I have my son covered under my ER health insurance. Will that not be enough?
My son has been offered the Patterson scholarship at University Of Kentucky. We live in Ohio. He is looking at UK, Ohio Univ, and Univ of Cinti. We haven’t received full details from UC but it blows my mind that UK can offer this generous scholarship and OU offers him less than 1/3 of his cost of attending at OU. We visited and loved UK. Our only issue is the strength and reputation of his chosen field of study which is digital media/arts/design and film. Our family has a lot to contemplate over the next few months…would be really hard to pass up this offer and I appreciate the added information in previous posts.
