Hey!
I have been accepted into these two schools already, and I don’t really know what school would be better.
I’m interested in Mathematics (and I plan on transferring to a school that has a statistics major no matter where I go)
I’m from Orange County, not into sports, and I plan on really just focusing on my academics when I get to college (for transferring)
I keep jumping back and forth between the two colleges. Some review websites say UMW is better, but then others say Hollins is better.
I’m still waiting on my admission decision from Virginia Tech, but I’m trying to prepare myself for a rejection letter (just so I don’t get my hopes up)
But yeah, any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
@Reed096 Both are fine schools. If the decision is so close, why not pick the much cheaper school (UMW total cost of attendence @27K vs @51K for Hollins) if you’re going to transfer anyway? Assuming you’re in-state with no merit aid.
@ihopeigetintoVT Hollins has given me a scholarship of $25,000 each year (which I forgot to mention, sorry) So the cost of attendance is pretty much the same for both schools, therefore, price isn’t much of a concern for me. But thank you for your input.
@Reed096 congrats on the scholarship . If it was me I’d look at the graduation requirements of the school where I want to transfer (if known…maybe Va tech?) to figure out which of theses 2 schools better offers the necessary required coursework (look at the transfer equivalency database). Also if either of the schools require first year students to take crap classes that won’t transfer anywhere else. If they are still both equal, pick the school you think you will be happiest at. Good luck.
Hi, I know I’m a bit late to the discussion so you may have already made up your mind…I’m a current student at Hollins University, planning to transfer in the fall but still waiting on hearing back from colleges (transfer decisions seem to be a lot later). I will say that Hollins is a great school, they have a strong writing program and offer good scholarships. However, I am in a similar situation. I want to major in mathematics, particularly stats (didn’t realize that when I made the decision to go to Hollins!) Hollins is a liberal arts school, I would say it’s not the best place to go if you want to major in math, even if you plan on transferring. On that note, the credits at Hollins are done differently than at most schools, making it very difficult to transfer and get credit for your courses. If you have any questions, I’d be happy to speak on this more, feel free to message me (if you can do that on here, I literally joined this sit five minutes ago and this is my first comment in a forum so idk). I don’t know anything about Mary Washington so I can’t speak on that, but I’d be happy to answer any questions you have about Hollins!
