University of Mary Washington?

Any information about this school? My son is thinking of applying (heard that it has a great history department). Would a kid from NY be comfortable there or is it a commuter school with mostly VA residents?

It's not a commuter school. It has grown from what it was (State teacher's college) from before UVA was coed (35-years ago) to a fine small university. I visited twice, once with each daughter, but neither applied there. It's very proximate to DC so not as "country" as you might think and seem to have a diverse population from out of state. Excellent professors from what I saw and my daughter has a good friend who went there when she did not get in to UVA, intending to transfer, but was so happy with it she's still there in her third year. One of the few colleges I'm aware of where you can bring your own horse!

It is well over 60% female and less than 1/3 of the students are from out of state (not that different from UVA or William and Mary) by state mandate, but Virginia has a pretty diverse population, too. Too many transplanted New Yorkers already, so he won't go lonely! ;)

We vacationed near Fredericksburg last summer and we were impressed with the town--it's fun and funky, a nice college-town vibe, seemed like a lot of local activities. The Mary Washington kids seemed outgoing and pleasant. If our DD was doing liberal arts, we would definitely have encouraged her to look into it. We'll be thinking about it for our two younger kids later on.

good psychology department

Behind every good man there is a woman, and that woman was Martha Washington, man, and everyday George would come home, she would have a big fat bowl waiting for him, man, when he come in the door, man, she was a hip, hip, hip lady, man.

oh wait you're asking about Mary...sorry...I can't help you...
