University of Maryland at College Park

I just read the "ugliest campuses" thread, and saw several people mention UMDCP's campus being ugly and in a horrible neighborhood. I've never been there, though I'm going to visit the campus (as well as others in D.C.) next week. Otherwise, I'm completely oblivious to the area.

Some quotes about it from the other thread:

"Annapolis is amazing, and of Maryland is fairly nice. Baltimore is possibly the worst city ever (the inner harbor is nice though), and College Park is a ghetto."

"I don't know about ugliest, but you need a gun if you want to walk more than 3 blocks off of either Hopkins, or UMDCP campuses."

Is it really in the ghetto?

No, it isn't. In my opinion those posts are ignorant.. I'm from Philadelphia and have seen MUCH MUCH much worse than UMDCP. Sure, the surrounding area isn't scenic or particularly attractive, but it's not really dangerous, in my opinion.

Plus, the campus itself is very pretty.

It's not that bad, honestly. If you drive for 10 minutes outside the campus, then yes it is quite scary but College Park itself isn't bad at all. The campus isn't as ugly as people said.

The University of Maryland campus is beautiful. The area around the campus is dominated by college students and businesses that cater to college students. It is definitely not in the ghetto.

College Park is fine and the campus itself is pretty nice.
