University of Maryland C/O 2020 Discussion

@maryversity Gotcha so then my best bet is just to do random correct? And the random generator will place me with someone who is in BSE?

Yes, the random will place you with someone in your program…however, u really want to choose someone yourself (on the Facebook page, for example) you can say you are looking for someone in BSE…you may also meet someone at admitted student day or orientation that’s in your program. And if you really want someone not in your program, there is still a chance you will get a room in centreville but just understand that there is just a possibility of another dorm in the scholars community. I believe that if there really is no room anywhere (highly unlikely event) you would still get a room in scholars but the roommate request wouldn’t be done. You are guaranteed a room in scholars community.

@maryversity Thanks so much for your help! I plan on joining the UMD Facebook page in about 2 weeks once I’m positive that UMD is where I’m going

Oops the word “if” didn’t appear when I said choosing someone on
Facebook…you absolutely can go random and in some ways I think that’s better. I know people who have selected roommates based on Facebook group that were a total disaster…people put on their best face online but the reality can be very different! So, if it’s random I personally think it’s less awkward because there are no expectations …so if things don’t work out, you are more likely to recognize it faster and act on changing the situation faster. But, that’s me. Back in my day there was only random and I got one disaster my first semester, and moved to a great roommate. When she moved into Greek housing I got a random that I am friends with to this day!

@maryversity Thanks so much! If you realize that you and your roommate don’t get along at well, is it possible to switch immediately or do you have to wait till the semester/year is over?

On the website they say merit award notifications begin in mid-March, so should be soon!

Just got my rejection on the portal. FML this was supposed to be a safety…

just got my rejection on the portal- 1960 SAT 3.4 uw with all aps and honors. Out of state

Daughter got wait listed for fall but accepted for spring 2017. Any insight on the wait list stats??

Got my acceptance into spring for comp sci through the portal!

1900 SAT superscore
3.4 unweighted GPA
4 AP’s, rest are honors
Oos from MA

@njclass2016 UMD for anyone with a B average GPA and 30 ACT is a low reach. You’re applying to some really competitive schools…good luck with UW, I’m waiting from them as well. I have a 4.1, 31 ACT and was accepted to UMD for spring semester undeclared so not going.

@JustaEngineer I got into 2 of my reach schools in Cali so I’m totally fine with being rejected from UMD I was just shocked/ confused (counselor said it was a safety). Best of luck to you though!

@njclass2016 Congrats, may I ask what reach schools?

@collegewhat1234 UC Davis (my UC gpa is 3.2) and Cal Poly SLO. Just waiting on UCSB now. I’m OOS

D got accepted end of January. SAT 1890, weighted GPA 4.2 (unweighted is something like 3.7), National Honor Society, only 1 AP but a few High Honors courses and the rest Honors. Waiting to see if there will be a merit award. She got merit from other schools, and we are out-of-state, so no $ will equal no go.

@LeavingNest1 all Merit Aid/Scholarship for UMDCP has been out for some time, if you haven’t received notification by now highly doubtful that you will be receiving any, Also FA awards were released today so you can check your FA status to check on merit Aid. Note that we didn’t receive any Merit Aid from Maryland either, the only school other then Mich. that did not offer my D a merit Scholarship, also putting it out of reach for us.

Financial Aid email came out but the system is totally down so we cant view it. I called the helpline and they said UMD released email without warning them and they weren’t ready. UGH

@fm0101 the Maryland website says that merit notifications start going out mid-March. I think it’s the big ones (e.g., Banneker/Key) that went out awhile ago. (But I know our chances are slim, and my D is more interested in U Del and Binghamton anyway.)

@LeavingNest1 did you get the email too?
