I was able to get in today and view my D’s FA, right after she got the e-mail that it was available. @LeavingNest1 funny my D has no interest in Binghamton, she has been invited to join Scholars and FRI but has no desire to attend Bing., we were there this weekend for Admitted Students Day, we are instate so tuition would be totally affordable…
@motortrend Yes, got the email. Was able to check this morning. No FA, as expected, but if that is also where they post merit awards, then she didn’t get any. $46K OOS for tuition, room and board. We’ll pass.
Same here @LeavingNest1 . I’m crossing it off my list also.
@LeavingNest1 @motortrend - We are in the same boat. Shame - UMD is a great school but my DD has full tuition offers from other great schools. Too expensive OOS
Wait, so how do we check the decision? I don’t see anything on the portal.
@Jotaro We got an email with a link. Go to www.financialaid.umd.edu and click on “check my financial aid status.” It will bring you to a log in where you’ll need to create a “Directory ID.”
@LeavingNest1 Interesting that my D top three choices are similar UMd, U Del, and Binghamton. She’s been accepted to the engineering school at all three. We are in state for Bing and she’s been invited to be in Scholars - she’s probably least interested with Bing. U Del has shown the most love with Merit and she’s also accepted to their Honors college - with the merit it’s not too much more than Bing. We have an upcoming admitted student day in April.
UMd is her preference, so far though they have not offered any merit (not looking good), but have shown her love in every other way. She’s been accepted to ACES Honor Program, we were wowed by their engineering presentations during admitted student day, and ACES and others have been in constant contact with her. As a parent, they so far seem to offer the most support. That all said, struggling to justify that a UMd education is worth that much more.
@fm0101 we were also at the admitted student day this past weekend at Bing, what did your D think?
@LGM2016 , she is still not loving Bing. don’t see her ending up there, feels that it is in the middle of nowhere, nothing to do around the school, campus other then the new dorms is old and depressing… she was very high on UMD CP but one of two school that didn’t offer any Merit Aid, the other being U Mich., so unfortunately they are out. If GW gives her any aid, still hasn’t officially been accepted but received a LL from GW she may end up there, otherwise Tulane or U Alabama Honors College…BTW I hope that the LGM stands for Let’s Go Mets!
@LGM2016 I just got my Presidential Scholarship in the mail today–don’t give up on Maryland yet!
@mitochondrial Had you gotten your financial aid email before you got the scholarship in the mail? There was no mention of a merit award on our FA statement, so I assumed we are out of the running for a scholarship.
@LeavingNest1 Yeah, it’s weird–I just found out I got the scholarship today through regular mail, but I did get the email to check my portal a few days ago. It may be a glitch though; I’ll call the admissions office on Monday if the scholarship doesn’t show on my portal by then.
@fm0101 Indeed LGM = Let’s Go Mets! My daughter is also waiting to hear from GW. Getting into Tulane is an accomplishment this year. My daughter’s good friend was wait-listed. Good luck!
@mitochondrial Congrats on the scholarship! We’ll keep slim hopes alive.
I am shocked my DD didn’t get anything at all. Her SAT was 1470 and she has a 96 average, great recommendations and ECs plus extensive leadership positions.
do you guys think that appealing for merit aid would do anything? I didnt get any and Im a little shocked as well
@tanookimario Can’t hurt to try, though I think the easier bargaining comes when two schools are both offering money but one is offering more. Then you can go to the school that offered less and ask if they’d match the higher offer.
@LeavingNest1 yeah I plan on doing that. Syracuse is offering me 20k a year so theyre looking a little bit better than UMD at the moment. I’m going to email UMD tonight
We were in the same boat until this weekend. DS was accepted to Honors at U Md; went to Open House last Friday, but we were bummed that he did not receive any merit aid. Then on Saturday, a letter arrived awarding him a Presidential Scholarship ($12k/year). He’s OOS so this put Maryland back in the running. He has a similar scholarship at RIT. The merit aid came very late so maybe more is still coming out. Good luck!!
I still haven’t seen anything on the portal, and it can’t find me when I search for my directory ID. Maybe it’s because I’m oos? Will decisions be on the portal tomorrow?
@Jotaro I think we had to create an ID. I’ll check with my D.
