when are decisions going to be made?
UMD will release decisions around the end of January. Their website says “by Feb 1”. Last year they were released on Jan 26
hey this might be a really stupid question but i am a bit confused about where the decisions will be posted… portal? through coalition app?? their website?? please let me know
Last year DD got an email to check the coalition app at a certain time. Be forewarned that it took her almost an hour to connect to the site because it was so slow.
The decision will be posted on your coalition app. And yes, it may take some time to connect given overload on the site.
My DS has applied to UMD for engineering since you can only select one major on the application. He has also applied to the School of Music (planning double major) which has a separate application. Will he know if he is admitted to UMD by Feb 1 (general decisions) or Feb 15 (music decisions)?
I would expect him to get the engineering decision by Feb 1 and the music by Feb 15, but that is just my guess.
Thanks. We are hoping that too. But you never know with UMD. Just wondered if anyone else had a similar experience.
From the information session we went to last year, general admissions come out by February 1, but engineering is also a specialty program so those will come out “a couple of weeks later”. My son applied early for engineering this year, so we are waiting also.
@SumbryMom - I don’t know. In past years everyone found out on the same day. My understanding is that on release day (fingers crossed in 2 weeks!) that students will hear if they are admitted, rejected, spring admission. At that time you will also hear if the student was admitted to scholars or honors. If you make it into your LEP, it will be listed as your advising college. If not you are in placed with undecided majors (can’t remember the name of that college). Any merit notification comes later. @maryversity and @SoofDad can you chime in? I appreciated your insight on the UMD forums last year.
We are waiting on engineering as well so I am really hoping my understanding is correct and we will hear at the same time as everyone else.
Last cycle, engineering released decisions on the same day as everyone else. I honestly dont remember when merit and honors/scholars notifications came but I remember it was very soon after decisions.
Engineering is a LEP, not a Specialty Program like Music. There are several LEPs at UMD, including Computer Science which was added this year. Honors and Scholars admissions are included in the initial decisions. Merit scholarships come out around mid-February
Here is a thread about the application review oricess
If you do not get into your desired LEP. you will be placed in Letters and Science (L&S) and can do an internal transfer
After meeting the pre-requisite requirements for that major, right @SoofDad ? I’m seeing this route more and more at schools like Rutgers and Penn State for engineering.
You have to take Gateway courses. These are the exact same courses that LEP direct admits take.

You are correct. That’s how it worked for all 3 of my Terps.
@reads2222 - Back in 2012 my son applied to the music school. He was told that he would hear from the school before hearing from the music department because one has to be accepted by the school FIRST before being accepted into the music department. He was accepted to both, and as they said, he heard from the school first.
Also, 3 years ago, my son got his engineering acceptance the same day as all other majors.
Thank you. Audition is this Saturday and hope to hear about Engg decision in about 10 days!
What is the average high school GPA for a student that would be admitted into freshmen connection?
I know someone OOS with a 3.9 Weighted GPA and a 1270 SAT that is in freshman connection.
