My child was admitted to UMD College Park University Honors, but to my surprise didn’t get any merit aid. Disappointed as other schools on her list granted substantial aid. UMD is # 1 choice, but finances are also a consideration. Has anybody ever gone back to UMD and explained such a situation and seen a grant subsequently awarded? Thanks.
We are also in the same position for our daughter. Maryland Resident, so in-state.
Stats: 4.0 UW / 4.79 W, 1460 SAT, 9 AP classes, 5 AP exams taken 5s in Calc A/B, English, Psych, 4s in Physics 1 and World History. Ranked # 3 in her class in a very strong academic high school. Solid ECs, Good recommendations. University Honors, accepted into Biology LEP and ILS learning community.
Accepted to multiple schools including Boston U and UVA, Merit scholarships from nearly every schools, sizable grant/scholarship financial aid from all ranging from $7,500 (merit - Towson U) to $33,000 (grant - BU).
Our EFC ~ $25K (which is not realistic for our family) so the only financial aid offered was $5,500 in Federal Loans. Have reached out via e-mail and phone to College Park but have not received any e-mail or call back.
We are in the same boat as eshhd90, this is our daughter’s #1 choice (unless UVA comes back with a workable financial aid offer), but are surprised and deeply disappointed at zero merit aid from Maryland.
Any advice, anecdotes would be helpful
UMD has a reputation for very limited merit aid. It certainly would be in line with a private school (such as BU.)
How do you check if you got merit scholarship?
@dogsrthebest If you applied and got in EA, UMD should have sent you an email back in February/March on how to view your financial aid information
They sent my son a letter, some weeks after he was admitted. It was also online.
@UMBC93, what did you daughter end up deciding? Did MD come through with any aid?
