University of Maryland College Park (UMD) Early Action for Fall 2024

Send any and all parts ASAP, order does not matter. Anything not in by Nov 1 kicks the student to regular admission (11/2-1/20).

D is equally interested in majoring in Govt/politics (college of behavioral and social sciences) or public policy (school of pub policy). Neither are impacted majors. Anyone have a sense of which might be an easier admit? We are oos so it’s going to be tough either way, I’m afraid. I couldn’t find it broken out in the CDS. Also I see their early action response date is Jan 30. Is that consistent with past years releases? Thanks

UMD admits to the school first and then to the major so it shouldn’t matter. If the student doesn’t make it into their major initially they are placed in Letters and Sciences and can then move into their major by completing the required prerequisites.

Yes, that response date is consistent. Decisions have been released the last Friday in January at about 5pm.

What happens if portal doesn’t show received though you know something was sent? CR and transcript were both sent exactly 10 business days ago. Portal shows Teacher LOR received but not the CR/transcript which were sent together by counselor. I know other schools have received CR/transcript.

I was going to give it til mid-next week then have DS email admissions office to inquire.

We had the Teacher LOR “Missing” yet it was showing as “downloaded” when the counselor looked into it. She ended up calling to let them know and they fixed it. If you look at last year’s EA thread, there are several posts with similar issues where items were missing. UMD fills most of its seats with EA applicants so it is imperative that you make sure everything is in to make the EA deadline. I would not waste even a few days, have your kid talk to his college counselor so they can contact them directly.

Thanks, we sent a note to the counselor!

Question about timing - I know UMD needs to receive everything by 11/1 to stay in the EA pool. Does that mean it has to be downloaded from common app by then, or applied to the portal by then? It seems to take them a long time to show downloaded items in the portal. (D’s teacher rec was downloaded from common app 10-8 and still isn’t in UMD portal). Her counselor isn’t likely to get the counselor letter in until late October (which may be too late)? How long it takes them to apply it to the portal is beyond our control
?

I think as long as everything is submitted a few days in advance of Nov 1, you should be fine. It might take a while to update on the portal because someone in the admissions staff has to manually check it off. If you don’t see the updates on the portal by Nov 2nd or 3rd, you can call and check.

I would def call/email and check before Nov 1 deadline. DS submitted multiple teachers recommendations and it turns out two of them had trouble downloading even though it says downloaded (so you’d be best off confirming they received everything). He was advised to contact Common App help desk to fix that. They did get the third teacher recommendation and they only require one but the other two are core subjects. And if he’d only submitted one, that would be an issue and we’d never know.

We had this.

If it’s fully submitted to common by 11/1, you’ll still be EA - even if in their portal it shows later.

I called because I was worried.

So if they confirm by email they have the documents needed for completed application, we should be good to go? Regardless of whether portal updates to reflect that by Nov 1 or not?

For the optional recommendations that had tech issues, they did say if it can’t be fixed by Common app, then have the recommenders send directly to their admissions email.

That was the case in 2021 - because the schools get so overwhelmed they can’t just pull everything right then.

But if you have concerns, call - we spoke to someone (they’re not easy to get ahold of).

This happened at several schools - the portals showed later dates but we were assured that if we submitted on time (the common app date stamp), we were ok.

I’ve got another question
daughter submitted common app which obviously includes her activities. Maryland just sent a list of to do’s which includes either a resume or a list of max 8 activities. (Common app has 10)

They haven’t added any of her common app forms to her portal yet. Will the common app activity list suffice for ‘activities’ Or do we need another form?

I would contact them and ask but they did not ask for additional forms beyond what was reported in common app

Just to clarify, some of their Limited Enrollment Programs (LEP) no longer guarantee internal transfers based on minimum requirements. The business school does not automatically admit internal transfers based on meeting minimum requirements. Instead, students in L&S students have to apply to get in (and there is no guarantee). Something to think about.

There have been rumors that, starting with the Fall 2024 freshman pool, computer science will also NOT guarantee internal transfers based on minimum requirements. I gather L&S students will also have to apply, with no guaranteed acceptance. I don’t know if this is certain or not. However, it does appear that way based on the common app.

As far as I know, other LEPs will still allow internal transfers as long as students reach minimum requirements.

You’re correct regarding some programs. I was responding directly to the poster and their students particular situation. It is good to clarify for other majors and others reading though.

Totally understood and agree. :+1:

My daughter submitted her EA application to LEP through common app on oct9th ,as of this morn the everything shows as not received on UMD portal, but the common app shows all went through fine and was downloaded. I have started to get worried on what is the next thing to do . Should I call the school, we sent an email but always get an automated response back. Can you suggest what number to call?
