University of Maryland-College Park

Hey everyone! So far this has been my top choice school, but the stats say that it's semi-difficult to get into. I was wondering if someone could tell me how my chances look?

The thing that concerns me the most is my SAT scores. My combined score is a 1980, but the majority of that is my reading and writing. I scored a 750 on reading, and a 730 on writing. I got a pretty wimpy 540 on math. Let's just say its not my strongest subject. That would make my composite reading/math score a kind of sad 1290. Also, I'm not sure how this figures in, but as our school is INCREDIBLY competitive, and someone with a 98 average wouldn't even qualify for the top 10, our school doesn't do class rank. So I don't have any ranking to give.

My gpa is fairly good, and fluctuates between a 3.7 and a 3.8 or so. I'm in nearly all advanced level classes at my current school as well. (excepting math of course, and an elective) I've received good AP test scores as well, 4's and up. I haven't taken the ACT due to my troubles in math.

When it comes to extracurricular activities, I'm pretty good as well. I have 100+ hours of community service logged, and have been involved in a myriad of activities from the neighborhood swim team to my church's orchestra and choir. I have done a LOT of activities outside of school, to be succinct.

In school, it doesn't looked like I'm too involved, but that's because our school has a very rigorous and competitive marching band that rehearses every day after school until about 6:30, so it doesn't leave a lot of extra time to be involved in the schools' clubs. I am in Spanish club, but that's it. Mainly, my school life is all about the band.

I'm wanting to major in psychology, and move into research or even perhaps become a psychiatric nurse as well. I have taken advanced psychology at my school, and graduated with a 100, which with added advanced points would come to a 110. (not sure if that counts for anything, but I'll throw it out just in case).

University of Maryland is my top college, and I very much want to get in. I have to apply this year. I don't think I will be taking the SAT again-don't want to risk lowering my other scores. Do you think they'll overlook my unimpressive math score? Or is that a really big deal there? Thanks so much for your input and advice, an if you need any more information I will be happy to provide it!.

Are you in or out of state? That could be important. It is kind of concerning that there is roughly 200point drop to math. Do you do well in math class? I would say you are not out of the dark.

The University of Maryland has gone up in value recently, and it’s been harder to get into. But, your stats exceed the required/recommended stats by a mile, so you’re fine. Also, not everyone is good in math, I doubt they would except you because of your math score, I’ve seen and heard worse. University of Maryland is also one of my choices as well. I think you’re fine, so don’t worry so much :)

I will be out of state. When I say that I am terrible in math, I don’t mean TERRIBLE. I finished with an 85 this year. It’s mainly math on the SAT I can’t seem to get any kind of handle on, despite taking numerous camps and study aid classes.

Thank you  My fingers are crossed!

Lol~ Mine are too, my parents really want me to apply to UMD because it’s close to home lol, but two seniors I know who graduated, said that they couldn’t get into UMD. I don’t know there academic record, but I’m still scared lol.

did you end up getting into umd?

UMD: Match
