Hey there,
Just wondering if it’s at all in my benefit (or within capable reach) to double major at UMD. I want to major in Statistics doubled with Information Systems. If you think that double majoring wouldn’t be a good idea, would a major in Information Systems with a minor in Statistics be beneficial?
Thanks so much!
Yes, it is absolutely possible to do a double major. The question is if it can be done within 8 semesters - depends on overlap of required courses and how many credits you come in with, etc, etc. Some people can, some people need an extra semester…or more. Don’t underestimate the challenge - while freshman courses may not seem bad at all, courses get increasing challenging and the workload gets heavier as you advance.
See the statistics track requirements here https://www-math.umd.edu/course-requirements.html

You don’t need to make the decision now. Go to orientation, talk to adviser, and then decide. Whatever you decide, I would not try to overload that first semester. You need time to transition to college life, develop friendships, learn how to prioritize, find that right balance of work demands and social life, etc. You may find that there are a lot of programs that you want to get involved that you had never considered. It’s all about time management and priorities.
