University of Maryland Transfer Questions

I am an in-state student attending University of Maryland - Baltimore County. I was not admitted to UMD-CP as an incoming freshman but now I'm applying for transfer for next fall. I didn't do too well fall semester and I heard that if you didn't get in as an incoming freshman, they wait to see your fall and spring grades. Does anyone know if this is really true? Also, since they wait to see my spring grades, they wont have my grades until Mid-may. However, If I apply early action, will it still make a difference in my application? Also, after 2 semester, 36 credits, I have about a 3.31. What do you think my chances are of getting in?

If you already had 31 credits with a 3.31, that is wonderful. Ur in, they will still look at ur freshman applications but that not much!

I am applying to Campus Park as a transfer from out of state. I have a 3.41 with 49 credits in a business administration curriculum. I also have a bunch of EC activates. I am afraid I might be turned down, why are you so sure he will get in with a 3.31. Is it because he’s a transfer from Maryland?

yes a transfer from maryland will get in with a 3.0 gpa. I'm pretty positive about this. Plus UMBC is a recognized school in maryland. For out of staters, it is possible to transfer with a 3.0 gpa too. Transfer applicants can get in easier than freshmen.

if u have 60 credits and a 2.7+ gpa from a community college (PG county, Montgomery county, and some others) you r guaranteed too.

But so a 2.7+ from one of the md cc will get u in but what about a 3.1 from out of state uni u said it was possible but do u think the effects of the economy could make them increase their normal standards -bc more ppl are looking to stay instate
also does applying for the spring semester stregrhen or weaken your chances??

hmmm. I hope you are able to write in complete sentences (and use complete words) when you do your application! ;)

As a state school, UMD takes only a certain (smaller) percentage of students from out of state. Just as it is with regular admissions, you’ll need higher grades, etc. to get in from out of state than if you were a Maryland resident. I assume that is the case with transfer applicatons as well. Good luck.

My son, who is a sophomore at UMD, is taking Accounting this semester. He would like to take the second half of Accounting this coming summer at Westchester Community College in New York. Will Maryland accept the credits? Thank You!

otto, have your son look it up on tce.umd.edu, on the left side of the page, pick transfer-course look up, and then do complete search, and search by state. So you find WCC, and it will give you a complete list of every course MD accepts, and what it will transfer as. If for some reason the course or school isn’t on that list, email tccinfo@deans.umd.edu, with a copy of the syllabus, and they can tell you what the course will transfer as.

hope that helps :)

otto,

You and/or your son might already know to do this, but just in case:
Students who are presently pursuing a degree at the University of Maryland need to obtain permission IN ADVANCE to take one or more courses off campus and have the credit transfer back into their degree program here. Paper forms for this purpose are available in your College advising office. This form will also sometimes allow you to forego certain admissions procedures at the transfer institution, since you will only be a visiting student.

I’m a freshman entering my second semester at Tulane University. I’ve got a 3.125 GPA and a total of 28 credits. If I were to get my GPA to at least a 3.2 by the end of my next semester, do I stand a good chance at transfering to UMD?

ClovisV - It will probably be a close call, might depend on some other stats also. What don’t you like about Tulane, if you don’t mind my asking?

Hi, I live in MD. But I go to school in PA. I am a political Science major with a 3.09 gpa in my second year at my school. With 46 credits. Also, I am on the senate at my school. I would like to know my chances in getting into UMD for the fall of 2010?

fallenchemist - money is an issue. I know UMD isn’t all that much cheaper, seeing how I live in VA, but I was hoping I could double major in something from the list of majors from the Academic Common Market to recieve in-state tuition. Aside from going to a cheap in-state school, my only other option would be to obtain a ROTC scholarship, which I’m currently in the process of doing. Basically, if for whatever reason ROTC doesn’t work for me, I want some alternatives.

Oh yeah, and other than the cost, I love Tulane, and if I could somehow pay for it without signing 8 years of my life to the military, I wouldn’t be so indecisive.

ClovisV - I completely understand, and thanks for the info. I know it will all work out for you. I didn’t realize joining ROTC meant 8 years of committment, I thought it was 4. Or maybe you mean the 4 during undergrad and 4 after. Good luck, whatever you decide!

I need help!!!

OT, but fallenchemist…do you have a kid at UMaryland? I don’t think I’ve ever seen you on the forum before. (Or, do you do a daily search for any mention of Tulane? )

Hi RTR - Yes, I search on Tulane for posts. Mostly just curious, but also because I often see such misinformation regarding the school and the city. I guess I have to admit it is my hobby these days, also easy to do while watching the playoffs (like now! Go Saints!).

I’m a freshman music major and I wanted to ask if a 3.78 is enough to transfer into UMCP for Fall 2010? Right now I have 28 credits and I’m from Virginia.

(Just messing with ya. Although it would be funny if I started inserting the word “Tulane” into random posts just for fun…)
