I made this thread for fellow UMD applicants and parents to discuss why they are applying, to spread encouragement, share admissions stats, and give the umd early 2024 applicants a place to get their questions answered and concerns addressed.
Hey I’m applying early action to UMD. I have a 1390 SAT and a 4.24/5 weighted GPA. I want to do CS at UMD because I think it could lead to great things, but I’m worried that I might not get in. It’s a great school, both of my cousins went there and so did my uncle. Good luck (but not too much ? )to other applicants.
HI -
When does the coalition app open? Also, does Maryland just want the one coalition essay or are there supplemental essays?
Thanks!
@NYC2018nyc - The UMD admissions website says that the application will open around the end of August. In the past they had only one essay, but they did have some short questions to answer.
Hey guys! Incoming freshman here. I remember being in your position last year and it was quite a pain getting through applications and then making my final decision. I ended up choosing UMD over 9 other schools even though it was not close to my top choice in the beginning. Ask me any questions about the process or UMD in general or why I made my decision. Wishing you all the best of luck!
Hi-- Wondering what your stats were? Also, did Maryland give you any merit aid? Are you OOS? Mahor? Lastly, when did you apply and how long did it take to hear back? Thanks!
Priority application decisions will be released at the wnd of January 2020
Just a reminder that, “All freshman applicants to the University of Maryland who meet the priority application deadline of November 1 and are invited to the Honors College are considered for nomination to the Banneker/Key Scholarship.”

No additional material is required for the B-K; the essay(s) and short answers in the coalition app are very important for securing the nomination. The B-K nominees are notified by late February, and invited to campus for an interview in early March; they would receive either a partial award, which covers almost all of the tuition (IS or OOS), and a book allowance, or a full award of tuition, room-and-board and book allowance. The results for B-K awards are out by mid-March.
@stemkid My stats were:
1540 SAT (740R/800M) Essay: 22
36 ACT (36/36/36/36) Essay: 10
GPA: 4.45 at time of application
Class rank: 1/617
I received the President’s scholarship for 12.5k a year. I am out of state. I applied as an applied math major, but I’ll be adding CS as a double major. I was admitted early action into the Honors College (ACES Cybersecurity). I submitted my application pretty early - early October. I heard back at the end of January.
Thanks for responding. Very impressive stats! My son is also OOS, scores slightly lower than yours but close. Your response was very helpful. Have an amazing time at UMD!
My daughter will apply for early action to UMD.
In state
SAT: 1520 (Math 800)
GPA: 4.21 (weighted)
10 AP classes
She spent 3 wks at UMD this summer and took one 3-credit computer science class.
She loves computer science.
If she doesn’t get in then they’re crazy!!
Hi there. You may not know the answer to this but do you feel UMD weighed your academics/scores the most? Do you think your essay held you in a slightly better position? According to Naviance UMD weithe sat/act/gpa is most important and less important are the ECs, community service, character and work experience. My son will be applying by the priority deadline and has a superb essay ( per me and his English teacher) tons of leadership, ECs and work experience, but 3.8 gpa and 1210 sat. Thoughts? And thanks?
@klw3513 - It is my opinion that the essay is important in UMD’s decision process. It is not more important than sat/act/gpa, but it can help to make a difference.
hi everyone, I am a current freshman and I just wanted to give some stats so you guys all have an idea of what the whole range of stats for the class of 2023!
GPA- 3.4 unweighted, 4.2 weighted
SAT- 1270
All honors classes freshman and sophomore year, 7 APs
Class Rank- 19/100
I also had a lot of volunteer work and extra curricular activities in and out of school. I am OOS, and I received the president’s scholarship for 12.5k a year and was admitted to biofire- a small living and learning community for bio/chem major students. I applied early action and heard late January! let me know if you have any other questions
Do you guys know if UMD-CP allows for 4 recommendation letters? I know counselor’s and one teacher is mandatory, but she has the second teacher that loves her, and there is a letter coming from a high ranking official in the National Office of her sport… Can all these letters be considered, do you know?
@ElenaParent - I’m not sure that any one on here can answer that. UMD will probably get 25,000 Priority Deadline applications. The AOs may not have the time to read extra letters. Maybe someone else can give a definitive answer.
@SoofDad Hmmm… I guess my daughter will have to talk to the UMD admission counselor (after we figure the contact information!) about that. One of these extra letters is the darn important one, the one that will explain everything about her. Thanks anyway.
Hey, thank you! What do you think made your application stand out? I’m panicking about being too generic of an applicant.
@dommmthebombb
@ElenaParent Hey! I had a similar question and apparently they don’t take extra recommendations but I’d still ask your counselor.
