University of Maryland vs University of Michigan (Computer Science)

I have gotten into CS in Maryland and Engineering in Michigan?

Which one is better for CS? How easy is it to declare the CS major in Michigan? Are majors selective?

I know a kid who is majoring in CS at UMaryland and loves it. I can’t speak for CS or engineering at UMichigan. Where are you instate at? How much can you afford?

I OOS for both so I’m not really thinking about cost. I would be totally willing to pay for the better school though

What do you mean by “better school”?

UMich, the university in general, has a higher overall prestige and student body with higher stats (probably more dedicated as well).

The CS faculty and classes at both schools are likely to be just as good or similar.

Ask Sergey Brin and Larry Page?!

I would vote for Michigan overall. Maryland CS is a strong program. But the other Michigan advantages – assuming you can afford the OOS premium – give it a boost that’s hard to pass up. And on the off-chance you end up with another major / minor / etc., the likelihood that Michigan’s secondary program will be stronger is high. While I believe Maryland recruiting for CS is also strong, I have a feeling that Michigan recruiting will also be burnished somewhat by its strong brand recognition.

I’d let the Michigan alums advise on how stringent CS admissions are, as I don’t know.

They are both good and you can do either if you have a strong preference and be assured of success, but I too would go to Michigan, it has the greater overall reputation. And it is supposed to be one of the best college towns too. If you are accepted to engineering I’m guessing it should not be a problem to do CS but check carefully to see.

If cost of attendance is not a concern (Maryland is $12K/year cheaper than Michigan), then I think Michigan is a better option. Both are excellent in CS, but in all other ways, Michigan is better.

Where are you from, and are there any transportation challenges for you in getting to (or around in) either of these places? What about weather? Is off-campus housing cheaper or easier to find in one location than in the other? Check out those issues as well.

Hi, I got into Maryland gemstone honors program and Umich lsa cs this year. Umich is obviously much more reputed but I’m not sure its worth the money. I’m oos for both schools. Weather doesn’t really matter to me. But considering all the other factors could someone tell me which one is better. Thanks.

^^^^You have to decide where you’ll be most happy. If the cost of attending Michigan is too much of a hardship, then UMd is a very good school.

I can afford both schools. I just don’t want to waste my parents money if it isn’t going to make that much of a difference.

UMich is the “better” school, it’s considered a “public Ivy”.
Is it worth the premium? Only you can figure it out.
Have you visited and spent an overnight?
Before you spend almost a quarter million on this, invest 2 days at each.
Typically, you’ll know which one “feels” right.

ARWU ranks Michigan’s CS department as #16 in the world, and Maryland’s as #17.

The DC area has becoming quite a technology hub, so Maryland benefits in that respect.

Is it easy to declare CS major in umich? Also I was wondering if physics is mandatory for umich lsa cs. If it isn’t would i benefit from taking it?

^^two good questions to ask an admissions officer at Michigan.
