University of Massachusetts Lowell OR Wentworth Institute of Technology?

TLDR; Between UML and WIT, where should I go (Computer Science Major)? UML is unappealing, but I would save lots of money in the long run. WIT is appealing but it would cost an arm and a leg… probably a liver, too. In the end, I know it’s my choice on which college I want to attend. I just wanted another persons opinion besides my relatives. Thanks in advance!

Summary:
I’ve been accepted to both colleges, now it’s just time for me to choose. I want to know your opinions on the schools, the pros and cons… everything. No matter what school I choose, I will be majoring in Computer Science.

Now before I begin to go into detail about my opinion of each school, I first want to state that in my eyes, college is a huge investment, and this is why I am struggling with my decision.

Anyways, starting off with UML. This was my top school, the school I wanted to go to the most, my priority. After touring the campus however, it was clear that I did not want anything to do with this school at all. The atmosphere, the community, it just wasn’t what I was looking for. Even though I wouldn’t be living on campus, the thought of studying there just doesn’t sit well with me. It reminds me too much of Boston University (another school I was looking forward to, but did not like the atmosphere). However, their Computer Science branch is great and the cost of the school is basically a steal. Also, if I were to attend this school, I will be taking advantage of their 5 year masters program. Again, it’s a good investment… but again, the thought of attending this school just doesn’t sit well with me. Should I put away my feelings and just go with it?

Now, moving onto WIT. I honestly didn’t know this school existed until my guidance counselors suggested it to me. At first I thought, okay whatever, because again, UML was my priority school. But after going on the campus tour, everything changed. I’m not quite sure how to describe it, but it made me excited. The atmosphere and the community is exactly what I wanted. What really captured me the most was their computer lab, unlike all of the colleges I visited (about 6-8 total), this one was outstanding. I could see myself learning and studying there without any doubt. But the college is well over double the price of UML, and this is where my “investment logic” comes into play. Also, if I go to Wentworth, I would have no idea what to do about a graduates degree. I’ve already received a scholarship from Wentworth, knocking down the price by $10,000… but it’s still a hefty price to pay. I really don’t know what I want to do at this point. My wallet says UML but my heart wants to go to WIT. Corny, I know; but that’s all I can describe it as.

Now, on a personal level… I don’t think I have any responsibility at all, and this is why I want to go to WIT. If I choose to go to UML, I wouldn’t have to dorm, leaving me to rely on my parents (which they would love). But I want to start being more responsible… and I believe that the only way that I can do that is if I leave home (aka going to dorm at WIT).

What should I do? :’)

You can dorm at both places. Just because you live nearby doesn’t mean you have to commute (some students live in the dorms during the week and go home over the weekends).

Let’s talk concrete numbers:
what’s your parents’ budget (what they can pay out of pocket?)
Calculate for each college
(tuition, fees, room&board) - (scholarships, grants) = …

Adults from the CC community will offer a cost analysis

If UMass - Lowell is much less expensive, then you may still be able to live in the dorm in frosh year at a lower budget than Wentworth. Both appear to be mainly residential (75% and 79% of frosh living in the dorms).

I am in the minority, I know, but I do not think that students necessary became more responsible when they live in a dorm. The money come from their parents and the food is always ready and served in the cafeteria. I do believe there are benefits living in a dorm but I will not put responsibility as one of them. I think if one must commute from home there are a lot of other ways to be involved in campus and/or show responsibility. Because of the price differential I would encourage my kid to chose UML versus W. A lot of bright students from our high school go there mostly for engineering.

4 or 5 years is such a short time. Kids have this fantasy college experience in their heads. You are going to be so busy studying that you won’t know if it is raining or snowing out. UML for CS. Very well respected. And without debt you will be less posh now but MORE posh later.

Also factor in that WIT has no name recognition. Just like you never knew it existed, probably no one outside of New England knows that it exists. I’m one state over and I don’t know anything about it. You’re not going on a cruise; you’re learning career skills and UML, where you can get a BS and MS, is an obvious choice. You have your whole life to learn to be independent. I’m sure your parents would love for you to be independent right now and take care of the laundry and cook family meals.

^actually, that’s not true, gearmom. Wentworth has plenty of name recognition in its region from professionals looking to hire engineers and technicians.
I agree that UML would be an obvious choice but we don’t know the exact numbers yet (budget, net cost).

@MYOS1634 Thought I qualified it as outside of New England. Don’t think too many folks people in Cali have heard off it. Sorry if that was not clear.

^Okay I see what you mean. Yes you’re right, no one’s heard of Wenworth in California. They would have heard of UMass but wouldn’t make the distinction between Lowell and the other campuses…

^ They wouldn’t know the difference between campuses in Cali which would work in his favor.

True, lol!

Did you make a decision?
