Hello! This my first time posting on this site and I am looking for help by some lovely people who know something about the UMD honors college.
UMD is my local state school and is currently my most reasonable and affordable option college wise. I recently learned about the honors college’s intigrated life science community and as an official nerd looking to major in microbiology being able to take those courses and be surrounded by fellow bio- people seems absolutely amazing!
Anyway I hear it’s pretty competitive; I’m a good student but not the very top of my class so I was looking to see if anyone knew what my chances would be:
Weighted GPA ~4.28 (Its going to keep going up but that’s what it will be when I finish my junior year)
I don’t know my unweighted but I’ve been getting straight A’s since the second semester of my freshman year. I think I had a few B’s before that.
My ACT score is a 31 and I am confident I can bring that up by a few points especially if they super score. (It was my first time taking the ACT) I also took the SAT in June and felt good about it but scores have not been announced yet.
I’m good at writing, so my essay is going to be well thought out and a bit quirky .
APs : US History 4, US Gov 5. This year I took Literature, World History and Chemistry. The scores are not back yet but I don’t think I flunked any of them. Also I have been taking every AP class available to me. My school is small so we don’t have tons of variety. Next year I am taking AP English Language, Calc AB, and Bio❤️. I’m also heavily considering taking AP drawing next year <is this="" a="" good="" idea?="" idk="" i="" love="" art="">
More Stuff- stick with me
OK I think it cut off the rest of my beautiful post but I’ll summarize:
National Honors Society
Girl Scouts
Art Stuff
Awesome National Aquarium internship
Science Olympiad
2 types of martial arts, one I have been doing since I was 6
Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!
Here are 2 threads that address some of your questions, but I do want to emphasize that no one on here can say what your chances are, of getting into the Honors College. I do not mean that as a slight, jit’s just an honest answer.
Agreed to what SoofDad said. I’m in the Honors College and most of my friends are in the Honors College (if not 100% of them) and I know from experience and talking to others that there is no way anyone can chance you for Honors. Everyone is so vastly different. Even good grades in high school isn’t a shared characteristic of all Honors students!
Really? Thank you so much for responding! Im going to work hard this summer to prepare my application and in the end im sure I’ll figure out something cool no matter where I end up.
@Sincerely7 - Do your best and you’ll be fine… What really matters are you accomplishments in college. I know that many applicants focus on the Honors College, but that is a reflection of who you were. There are other programs called Departmental Honors (not open to freshman) that show what you CAN accomplish once you graduate.
