Hi All.
Applications to MIT and six Ivies finished, all what were possible done, time to wait. And I decided to look for some alternatives for my son.
University of Melbourne appeared very attractive due to high places in different ranking. But after some research in internet I found a lot of opinions that despite high ranks Australian universities not enough selective, not competitive and abnormal easy for graduation. And specially for internationals their main target is to get money, without care about real strength of applicant and real results of student. And that is opinion not of one-two people.
Does it true or not? What is real value of University of Melbourne undergraduate degree outside of Australia? Does it possible with this degree to be admitted in graduate schools of world Top 20 universities?
You are right that the general perception around the world is that Australian universities are going to be more lax in their entry standards. Also, the they definitely use international students as cash cows. However, it is certainly possible to do well in these Australian schools and if you do so, you should have a strong chance of admission to T20 graduate schools (but this is obviously very dependent on doing well) because the degree from Melbourne is definitely recognised, and top grades with top recommendations can certainly allow your son to go far
@Sergeii Thank you for response. But does your experience special with Melbourne U or with some another Australian universities? For example Melbourne 3+2 years program structure. It wrapped in beautiful words, but by fact after 3 years studying of Computer Science you will get Bachelor of Science degree … that not accepting as professional degree in Australia!!! So after 3 years studying of Computer Science in Australian university you wouldn’t have right to work in Australia as computer professional. For me that look like as trap to force man pay for 5 years study instead of 3 years just to get something that he can use in real life. Does you confident that with this Bachelor of Science degree it’s possible to be accepted in USA graduate computer schools?
And generally after I found that for guaranteed entry to Computer Science it’s enough 31/45 IB points…
31 from 45??? I really have doubts.
I can’t answer your questions specifically for computer science because I’m not so familiar with that subject, so sorry!
