University of Miami HPME

Hi there I really wanna know some more information about this program. I believe you do not have to take the MCAT or the score does not matter for this 7 Year Program, is that so? What SAT 1 and II scores should I be aiming for? I have done several internships and will continue doing more ec's to strengthen that aspect on my application. I also believe the minimum GPA is 3.7 so how hard is that to maintain? I have taken several AP courses; have a strong GPA, and a solid rank in school. But all these factors aside what are these schools really looking at? For all the people who got in to the program for the 2007-2008 year I would really appreciate it if you posted your stats and ec's. Any and all information will help, thank you very much!

Also forgot to mention I do not live in Florida, does that have a strong influence on my acceptance?

Alright well my friend really wants to get into this program so I know some stuff about it. There are roughly 3,000 applicants a year for the program. Of those 3,000, 300 people get chosen to come in for an interview and of those 300 there are 30 chosen for the actual program. And of those 30 I believe 3 were out of the state of Florida so I would assume that being a Florida in state resident has a strong influence on acceptance. My friend said that the average person that got accepted had a 4.0 unweighted GPA and a 1500 SAT score. So yea the program is EXTREMELY competitive to get into, as are most all 6 or 7 year med programs. If your stats don't match up to those I would suggest looking at the University of South Florida in Tampa. You get an automatic acceptance into their program if you have a 3.7 unweighted GPA and a 1350 SAT score. EC's I know these programs like to see is that you've had experience working/interning in a medical setting whether is volunteering at a hospital or shadowing doctor or doing some sort of medical research. I hope that info helped...good luck!

Thank you very much for replying! Wow that pretty intense, I think I may be all right on the gpa aspect but I gotta push at the SAT. However am I still correct in saying you dont have to take the MCAT. Also is it very difficult to maintain a 3.7 gpa during undergraduate? Thanks a lot!

I'm not sure about the MCAT thing, but yea college isn't high school so lets say you had a 4.0 UW GPA in high school well most kids depending on the college they go to will end up having 3.5's or 3.7's. Its not impossible to maintain a 3.7 your just going to have to work very hard for it.

The program kind of changed last year, I think they accepted many more out of state kids than years before (and eliminated the 6 yr option), I think it was almost a 50/50 split between Florida residents and out of state residents. Also current students said over half of them had gpas above a 3.9, so the college gpa shouldn't be a concern. MCAT is required I think 27 after 3rd yr and 25 if u take a fourth year.

Thank you for the info BuSmed and sugababi, so the GPA is not impossible to maintain thats a relief. But you do have to take the MCAT thats kind of a bummer. Thanks for the great infomation!

For HPME, it says that you need 3 teacher recommendatinos. Would a counselor recommendation count as one of them?

Three (3) Letters of Recommendation from high school teachers or other appropriate
evaluators. … comes from MIAMI Supplement instructions…you might consider a counselor an “appropriate evaluator” or there might be more appropriate choices. I assume that your choice is part of the evaluation !

If you are accepted into the program, can you apply out at the end of BS degree? I can’t seem to find any detailed information on the U Miami HPME program on their website.
