University of Miami Prestige

Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if you all could tell me a bit about the reputation and prestige the U has as an academic institution. I know threads on this topic exist on CC but they are from a few years ago so things may have changed. I also know that Miami’s rep has been quickly and steadily increasing over the last few years (and overall since Shalala took over). I remember students describing Miami as an up in coming hoping to place itself in the Umich-Anne Arbor category of schools. Has it accomplished that? Is Miami still on an uphill trend? Will the addition of a Havard Dean as President further augment that? I know it was as high as 38 in the US news ranking a few years ago and the competition for admittance is really rigorous.

U of Miami is a very good school…on a side note in general ignore those silly rankings. but the school to watch in south florida is nova southeastern they are making leaps and bounds on all fronts from undergrad to medical research and it is a beautiful school. http://www.nova.edu/

Better comparisons to the “U” would be Boston University and Northeastern University. It’s an elite private university, but at this point, it’s hard moving up in the rankings.

PLEASE do not put so much emphasis on rank. It really isn’t important in the long run. When you’re walking to classes and finding clubs to join and creating a life for yourself, rank will have little to zero significance. But to answer your question, UM is a great school, but I don’t think it’s very prestigious.
