University of Miami Regional Information Sessions

University of Miami admission officers have information sessions planned for Florida

and for a variety of other places

<a href="http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,2613-1;29761-2;9406-3,00.html%5B/url%5D">http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,2613-1;29761-2;9406-3,00.html</a>

this fall. You may find these meetings helpful as you plan your applications.

A more complete list of regional information sessions by lots of colleges can be found at

Good luck during the application season.

FYI... those interested in attending an "information session" in your state...BE PREPARED TO BE INTERVIEWED! that was not at all clear when my daughter attended one a few years ago, but that IS what it really was! good luck!

That's interesting, and a good tip. Some colleges make it really clear that they are on the road to do interviews, and some make it clear that they are not. I have only been to the kind of event where no interviews happen.

I think happycollegemom's daughter had an informational interview, rather than attended an information session.

My daughter and I attended the Boston area information session last night, and no one was interviewed.

In fact, I overheard the admissions rep telling a student from NH that he would have his interview sometime in the next weeks; also that these interviews were open to residents of NH but not to those from Massachusetts, as Massachusetts is such a big market for them.

S had a regional interview a few years ago, coincidentally in NH. It was pretty clear on the mailing we recieved that it was an "informational" interview. The rep was wonderful and got my S so excited about UM. He noted when we would be making a campus visit and unexpectedly met us to give S some info and literature on one of his interests that they had spoken about. This personal touch made a huge positive impression on S.

I am going to one in New York and based on Miami's web site, the University of Miami Regional Information Sessions seems just to be a Q & A. How can it be an interview if someone didn't even apply yet?

<a href="http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,2613-1;29761-2,00.html%5B/url%5D">http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,2613-1;29761-2,00.html</a></p>

I THINK the links that I posted are for presentations about the college followed by Q & A sessions, but please let me know if they are something different. I'll be curious to hear what you think of the session you attend.

My daughter and I attended the Boston area session.

A U of Miami rep spoke for about 30 minutes, primarily about the application process, then showed a 15 minute video about the university.

Some highlights:
- He recommended that most should apply Early Action, and gave statistics to back up this recommendation.
- He briefly mentioned available scholarships.
- He emphasized the flexibility between the different schools, encouraged interested students, for example, to apply to the business school even if they were still undecided about their eventual major
- Second admissions rep, who is an alum, mentioned how he started out in marine science, had the opportunity to do research as a frosh (or soph, can't remember exactly), figured out the field really wasn't for him and ended up majoring in English and Education
- Mentioned that Miami is a good place for internships, and since U of Miami is (more or less) the only game in town, there is not the same competition for same as there would be in multiple college towns such as Boston.

This was followed by Q & A.

Both men wore suits and ties. No snacks were served.

It was our first info session so we can't really compare it to anything.

Mario, the regional info sessions are different than the regional interviews. The events listed in tokenadult's link <a href="http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,2613-1;29761-2;9406-3,00.html%5B/url%5D">http://www6.miami.edu/UMH/CDA/UMH_Main/0,1770,2613-1;29761-2;9406-3,00.html</a> are info sessions and not interviews. The regional interviews are set by appointment only. Enjoy your info session.

Thanks, great link!

just a quick comment. my daughter had not yet applied when she had WHATEVER it was...WE thought it was just informational, but it was interview. since she hadn't yet applied, he asked things that would EVENTUALLY be on her application...SATs, GPA, ECs, etc. so i'm confused, but as long as you all know what it's about!
