University of Miami Visit

Backhandgrip, You asked about merit aid and from what I can tell (based only on my daughter's experience) it is fairly generous. She received a 3/4 scholarship only on the basis of her admissions information. No extra essays, projects, etc. As for her stats, she has a 3.93 GPA, a 1380 SAT (31 ACT) and is 10th in her class of 330, so nothing outstanding if I compare it to most of the stats I've seen on these posts.

Based on the Admissions information, she should have qualified for only a 1/4 or possibly 1/2 scholarship, but we are not complaining......

Woo Hoo!!! Great review wish.......did you run into my son? LOL To answer a few questions above and hopefully be a little help.

Basketball games are growing in popularity at UM. Due to the move to the ACC and a new and exciting coach. It is free.....but only for 1000 students. When Duke came to town earlier this year, not everybody got in. Son said he got in line at 2:00 pm for an 8pm tip. Football games are free to all the students. It's 1.00 to ride the metro-rail up to the Orange Bowl, but they get into the stadium free with their CaneCards. Someone ask about intermural sports. My son got into this very quickly. He loves participating in all the different sports (and has even been trained as a referee for them, getting paid to do so). He's one of those kids who is good, but not great at sports. But enjoys playing just for the sake of playing. And they have everything, from football to soccer to water polo to......playstation tournaments. So there is something for everyone.

dstark.....visit the website at umiami.edu......go to the Toppel Career center page and you will see some of the companies that actively recruit on campus.

Son lives in the suites this year and I ask about them actually cleaning the bathrooms. LOL. He admitted it isn't the most fun, especially 4 guys sharing the bathroom, but he also wouldn't be so ashamed for anyone to go in there so it must not be too bad. LOL.

There is a shuttle that runs weekends to Cocconut Grove (runs till I believe 3 am) so the kids going to CoccoWalk do not have to take a cab. Also to Sunset Place. Son says they use as much public transportation as possible since traffic is usually bad. Matter of fact I know they went to South Beach Saturday night....and took a cab. But I agree....I wouldn't walk to Cocco-Walk.

Thanks again for the wonderful report wish......I look forward to meeting you next year at parents weekend. ;)
