University of Miami

Well I recently discovered that I love UM. I also love UCSB, and since I am a California resident I would need good scholarships and grants to consider choosing UM over UCSB.

So my question is when is the best time to apply if I'm hoping for an academic scholarship?

Early Decision?
Early Action?
Regular Decision?

Apply Early Action. You're not sure if it's your dream school and if you can pay for it, but you'll still be accepted ahead of time and therefore have a better shot at getting a scholarship. :)

trust me Miami throws money at people. If you have above a 1400 SAT and a high gpa and good class rank you will geta ton of money.

ED because that's the first set of people they throw money at. EA and RD are the leftovers, and can get shafted when it comes to scholarships. And if cost is a concern and they don't meet your need, you have a legitimate excuse not to attend there, and can get out of your ED commitment.

Is ED really a commitment? If I didn't get a scholarship could I easily reject their acceptance, or would it be a bigger hassle?

Oh and thanks for giving me this information. I'm really interested in UM bc they have everything I want in a college (academics, a lot of majors, med and law school, social life, beautiful campus, diverse student body, close beaches, and of course FOOTBALL!!!!!!)

ED means that you agree to attend if accepted. However, people get out of their ED if they have financial concerns with the school. Depending on the school, it can be a hassle, but I don't think Miami will care too much. Miami is a great school, you should have fun there!
