University of Michigan, Ann Arbor App Fee Waiver

Hello

So I gave my GRE. My score is 327. 168 quant and 159 verbal. And my AWA is 5.5.
Well, when I gave my GRE, I mentioned four universities that wud receive my scores free of cost. I did NOT mention UMich at ALL. Two weeks later, before I had even given my TOEFL test or started registering for applications, outof nowhere, I got a mail from UMich that said I was "an outstanding" candidate, one of the most elite in the world, and who deserved a Ph.D. admission to an engineering university. They even said "We want that you should join the community" and "We are encouraging you to apply by waiving app fee" and "kindly let us know at the earliest whether you are accepting this invitation for fee waiver " and "hoping to look forward to your application and meeting wit you"
this was followed by my code for fee waiver.

I am very surprised. I was not even thinkin gof applying there because, you know, it's too ambitious. I am doing chemical engineering from a university of national repute in India. My GPA till now is 8.7/10, my toefl is 116, I have no research papers, but got experience in national laboratory and two projects in my own college.

Has anyone else received such a mail? if so, what do you make of it? And oh yes, I read on their website that they do not give app fee waivers to non-US resident, which is kind of a shock, really. Also, none of my freidns with scores like 334 or 335 received such a mail.

I know of such mails for undergraduate applicants. For graduate? Not sure at all!
When in doubt, the simplest thing to do is email the dept/admission office (not clicling on the email, but straight from the actual website); state what you told us (without the implied question marks and eye rolling): I received this mail, is it legit, and would you suggest I apply?

Thanks. Yeah I did exactly that.

They confirmed it. Its a real thing.
Odd, isn’t it? Well I am thrilled they think I am worth looking at for a Ph.D. I am surely applying.

Thanks :-D
