@hunter21 those are good stats! If anything, you may be deferred for EA and hear back during regular decision but I think you have good chances!
@sushiritto I mostly just put the “rolling” part based on what I’ve seen from last year’s class/the year before – from my experience, the people who applied near the deadline heard back towards the end of the period.
Again, EA is not rolling. However, it happened before that they could not finish reviewing all EA application and deferred some of the later applications till mid Jan.
Around half of the EA application submitted in the last week before deadline based on the application ID checked 4 years ago. Those submitted way before the deadline did not correlate with earlier notification.
I have taken all honors and AP classes and have a 4.14 W GPA
Sat score: 1370 (1380 superscore)
Math: 670 (680 superscored) English: 700
Played Varsity Ice Hockey For 4 years (currently captain but didn’t include in application as season had not started)
Played travel hockey for most of my life
In NHS
Ski Club
Future Business Leaders of America (Club)
Play guitar
Volunteered for boys scouts projects
Helped elderly people diagnosed with dementia, Alzheimer’s, etc and played memory games with them at the nursing home
Volunteered as a youth ice hockey coach for my town clinics (year round)
Worked as a lifeguard
Worked as an ice hockey official
There are more but how would my chances look with these kinds of stats?
I’m also OOS and applied to COE
@blah2244 I just don’t know if we can make any assumptions on the FIFO method of reviewing apps at UM, since postings on CC can be unreliable and it’s definitely a very small sample size with more than 30,000 EA apps being considered. In any event, great post. :-bd
Also, don’t most of the college applications get submitted near or on the deadline date? That would be my bet. Aren’t most humans procrastinators by nature? :))
What does LOCI . stand for?
Letter Of Continuing Interest
@sushiritto if the need arises, how would one go about making and sending a LOCI?
If you guys could chance me for LSA, I’d really appreciate it!

I know most of us will get deferred, so when can we expect a RD desicion? Is it late march/early April like others or is it sooner?
Hopefully, a student from last year that was deferred, then accepted, and who wrote a LOCI, could chime in and speak from direct experience.
Absent that, I’d write a sincere and genuine note to the admissions’ office and your local admissions representative and express your strong desire to attend UM. Maybe you have a story of when you became a UM fan years ago. Maybe recall a portion of your “Why UM?” essay and weave it into a 1 or 2 paragraph note/letter.
But let’s hope you all get accepted and won’t have a need for that LOCI.
I have a 4.0 unweighted gpa, with multiple honors/ap classes. (I am in AP Biology, AP Lit, AP calc BC, and AP Psychology this year ) also have taken 4 years of foreign language (German)
I am ranked top 5 in my class of around 500
SAT: 1480 (780 math, 700 English)
ACT: 32 (not superscored)
I have played 4 years of softball and 3 years of basketball in high school (as well as being captain of my travel softball team)
NHS
Link Crew (leadership club)
Key Club
Make a difference club
Have around 70 community service hours
Part-time job
I am also in a math and science program (MST) in
school
I feel that my grades and scores are okay but not sure that I’m in enough EC. Also, my writing scores on standardized testing are not the greatest, but hoping my application essays make up for that. Hoping this is enough to get in! Michigan has been my dream school for as long as I can remember!
Should all OOS students expect a deferral no matter what?
Has anyone heard back yet?
Got deferred EA but accepted RD last year. Acceptances are not FIFO. Some RD will get in before EA’s do when the second round starts up. Review the deferral thread from last year (one will start this year by end of week).
Should you receive a deferral, here is some non-solicited advice: Remember to use social media as a “public” recommendation. Yes. Admissions does google applicants - especially those that may be on the cusp.
Google your name and see what shows up. Find a way to utilize SEO to move important items up. Post accomplishments, hobbies/interests, senior photos and even pics of yourself on campus on your FB page - and use your name in tags. Consider it a visual student resume and way to support what you are about to submit in your LOCI.
@givemethtcheese No. OOS also got admitted EA. There are just 5 times more application from OOS than in-state. You can look at the EA result from previous years in this forum and see. I did put down all the data from 4 years ago when my D1 applied and there were significant number of OOS students admitted EA.
@Camille08 before for sure! Offices close on Friday, so expect the 22nd latest!
does legacy status matter more in EA or RD round?
@ericacv I’d assume RD, my U of M rep that visited my school said that it was mostly used as a tiebreaker.
Find it kind of interesting that this thread is so much smaller than Class of 2021’s – they had over 100 pages at this point last year :))
