Hey guys, I’m currently a sophomore at Umich studying Computer Science-- just wanted to give some insight on Michigan. I was in your guys’ positions 2 years ago so I understand the worry and pain haha. But nonetheless, here we go.

In Highschool:

ACT: 32, superscore 34. Math 36 English 33 Science 33 Reading 32 Writing 11

GPA unweighted 3.74 (took 10 Ap’s – including ap physics c freshman year and ap chemistry sophomore year)

I was the “dumb kid” in a group of smart friends (who all got above 35 on their act freshman year lol).

nonetheless, during the summer/fall of 2016, I applied to 19 schools. Got ‘deferred’ from purdue engineering (which was a surprise because my dad is a purdue alum), deferred from umich, and a lot of other schools… Actually got rejected from case western LOL.

Regular decision: basically got into umich CS lsa, and got into NYU stern with a 20,000 dollar scholarship.

after I got deferred-- like a ton of OOS applicants, I basically gave up on Michigan because I just assumed I didnt get in. My knowledge was that Michigan admissions view first-semester senior grades and my gpa went from a 3.74 to 3.4 (non-cumulative) that semester. But somehow even with that gpa drop, they accepted me some random day in march. So have hope! But don’t depend on it. If anyone has any questions regarding computer science, school atmosphere, trends, or stuff in general, let me know!

Also I knew a girl who applied with 36 ACT and 5 on all her APs as well as 4.7 GPA and she was denied flat out. I think this is because with that high of stats, Michigan is convinced that you’re not actually going to enroll, you are just looking for an acceptance. Shouldn’t people like that be at a more competitive university?

This whole early action thing is a joke. Most are deferrals. What’s the point to all of this. I continue to believe a lot is based on luck. Good luck.

@scaramouch when did you get notified on your portal

This whole concept of deferring “overqualified” candidates has been rather prominent in both the Michigan and Tulane threads… if it’s plausible, how is that fair to higher stats applicants who, as a result, end up getting deferred from many of their target schools? Obviously it also depends on “fit” and so forth, but this idea of purposefully deferring those with high stats due to a perceived lack of interest scares & disturbs me… also seems somewhat unverifiable given various applicants with the highest stats are simultaneously accepted as rumors of over-qualification spread from those who were deferred.

I don’t think Michigan rejects anyone EA

Deferred.

OOS Asian-American Male
35 ACT (1 try)
780 SAT Math II
770 SAT US History
National Merit Commended
3/230 class rank

2 Varsity sports, research, lots of volunteering.

Mich was one of the lower schools on my list. I’m worried now.

It seems real based on comparing directly in one high school, in state even. All visited of course being in state. No one sees all the essays, letters, etc. but when you can compare the grades in the same courses, it seems real. Makes sense from the university’s point of view, and also human nature. Still rough for the applicants.

Accepted to LSA!!! So excited and really happy. 34 ACT, OOS, Hispanic, good EC’s, and wrote a really meaningful essay. Congrats to everyone!!!

Does anyone still not have a response on their portal or an email

@busymd - Portal notification was around 3pm. Didn’t have access to a computer to check until tonight.

Can anyone explain to me the difference between the two defer letters ;;

Congrats to everyone else who got in! Sounds like a lot of people got deferred so keep your head up if you didn’t get the result you were hoping for.
