University of Michigan Ann Arbor Class of 2022 Early Action

@TrapNumen Don’t get worried. The fact that you were deferred shows you were too overqualified so they didn’t accept you because they thought you wouldn’t go there. Same thing happened to me I had 35 ACT and 4.5 GPA and was deferred

Son got deferred.

OOS Asian-American male schooled overseas
34 ACT
4.09 GPA W
IB diploma (HL math/physics/econ)
790 SAT Math II
800 SAT Physics
2 varsity sports, many activities

Not at all! I called today to ask when decisions would be release and he told me that they’re gonna roll out at any time until the 24th. Also they have nothing to do with when you applied nor are FIFO (first in first out), since I applied on the 30th or 31st and heard back at 3. Good luck!

Deferred. OOS
CBSE Indian High School Student.
US Citizen.
1480 on my SAT (800 Math and 680 English)
800 on SAT Subject (Math II, Physics)
95%+ Overall Predicted Score and Good High school track record.
Lot of Extracurriculars. STILL HOPE!

Has anyone gotten denied? or just deferrals?

Is there a difference between the two deferral letters? and also for regular decision are results rolling?

Don’t waste your time on speculating the difference between deferral letters. This has been discussed many times in the past and there is no correlation between one letter or other with final decision. RD result is rolling, but it is not FIFO. It just means it can be any time before the April deadline.

I applied to Ross but I only got a deferral letter from LSA. Does that mean I didn’t get into Ross either? Or will I get a letter from them too…?

Allow me to dispel this rumor - Michigan does NOT defer OOS students for being “overqualified.” There is no such thing. Michigan uses a holistic approach to admissions, meaning your essays, recommendations, and activities are more important than your test scores. Your “Why Michigan” essay is particularly important as an OOS student. If they don’t detect enthusiasm, they will defer you because they have other people who may show more enthusiasm, even with lower stats. Michigan is a selective school, and it is a very selective school for OOS students. It is not a safety school and should not be treated as such.

This is not to say that there aren’t factors that go into decisions beyond just the applicants. Of course, as a state school, Michigan must meet certain quotas, most importantly that 50% of the students must be in-state. As such, they do indeed defer a lot of OOS students to ensure this balance. But it is not for being overqualified.

I’m so fkn annoyed!! Deferred from Brown and now deferred from Michigan. 34 ACT, 4.0 UW, and reasonable ECs. I don’t get it why cant they just make a final decision??? I’d rather be rejected than deferred.

Just kidding, hoping for the best in RD.

Don’t get down on yourself! Assuming you are OOS, Michigan is very hard to get into. Plenty of OOS students get in during Regular Decision after being deferred, and you will get into lots of other colleges as well!

My son got that same deferral letter 4 years ago and got in on regular decision. My daughter just received the same one as well. Fingers crossed for her.
