University of Michigan- Ann Arbor gives a application tip?

I was reviewing University of Michigan- Ann Arbor website, and notice a application tip given.

Application Tip:
Include your 8-digit U-M ID on your application for faster processing! If you've ever received mail from our office, this 8-digit number is listed right above your name on the address label!

Would this be significant if you've gotten mail from the university, and use your 8-digit U-M ID? I do know one person who have gotten mail from the university, I guess perhaps being able to ask someone in person would be more imformative ( which I plan to do), but what do cc users know about this?

Still open for answers, but now after thoughts I would assume recieving their mail is significant of admission or else they wouldn’t ask nor place a digit ID, as I can’t recall any other university with same system.

lots of universities have that system actually, even Michigan State University- east lansing.

umich received almost 30,000 applications this year, so… the ID system is how they keep track of things.

oh yeah, i had a UMID about a year before i applied, and i didn’t include it. i had no problems with my app getting processed.

If Michigan State University have the ID system, when I recieved their mail there was no ID on top. Thats why I really question on whether there must be some advantage. I actually have a cousin who recently got mail from the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor, live in same area as me, we go to the same high school, and even to include we have been going to the same school since elementary. The chances of both of us getting accepted into the same university is low. Also to note ( not to be mean, rude etc…), I’m not actually trying to attend the same university as him ( looking for something new, on top of going to college ofcourse). I recently just had to remove Kalamazoo College ( a third university I had recentlly added to my list) after I found out he had a call by one of their coaches.

It’s almost like murphy’s law for me all the time. Though I do recall getting a PSU ID, but went to website and notice there is no where to place it. Also most recently got mail from other universities, another two to point out University of Wisconsin- Madison and Cornell University… no ID system there either ( actually was a booklet like Cornells).

Can you read? The answer to your question is right in what you quoted; your app will be processed faster if you include your UMID. It’s not some secret code that will guarantee admission if you write it down.

^
Wow

I know it’s not a code that can have automatic admission ( still things to review) but I wouldn’t be surprise if it could be a catch, boost etc… It’s not like a university will publicly state that those with a 8 digit ID, admission records show their admission chance was 20% higher than average.
^
Those type of things just aren’t publicy stated much.

^
no

the UMID will only help them put your file together faster.

it’s not a catch.
i got mine from requesting info from the school of music… online

like i said, they got about 30,000 apps this year. there is no way they would keep track of who got the ID and when.

It just helps them access your records faster…there is no advantage. I know and have seen this firsthand.

wow…never fail to make me laugh in real life

Hmm… no need to be rude. Points @ the “Can you read” post. I think he understands now that the UMID helps with processing and keeping track of application materials. He is a rising senior I believe, so cut him some slack. He has many questions just like many seniors. Even if they are redundant or ignorant. I think NYU uses a numbered ID system to track materials. They also use it when students contact the university to ask about if their files and materials have been received. Some schools that experience a great influx of applications use the numbered ID system.

Entertainer…
you don’t know Coolbrezze on this forum…

I don’t him on the forums.

Thanks for the answers, and thanks Entertainer for pointing out other similar systems to me.

( I do understand now that the UM ID is help for processing your application faster… and keeping track of your application material…)
