My brother is a first year student at UMich. I am applying for fall 2016. Can I include this somewhere in my application and will it help me?
Yes, legacy status helps (sibling, parent) for LS & A, but only if your stats are competitive with the rest of the applicant pool. Legacy won’t help you as much to get pre-admit to Ross business or College of Engineering unless your stats are ultra competitive.
As @trackmbe3 indicated, you still need to be an otherwise well-qualified applicant. Things like legacy are just hooks that can give you a little boost for U of M.
Now, if we were talking Notre Dame, that would be a different story. Do keep in mind that legacy status is valued differently by different schools.
It would make for an interesting twist to your personal statement. Work in all the great things your brother has said and his experience. Maybe throw in a little sibling rivalry to make it interesting.

UM will normalize your GPA by considering all A’s 4, all B’s 3 etc. Your ACT is above average for LSA OOS, but probably a little low for CoE (how is your math score?) and for Ross you need to be almost perfect. I would definitely apply EA. Michigan really wants to get to know you, so make your essays as personal as you can.
LSA is where i want to go, want to go into medicine, but anyway math 760 SAT and 33 ACT
It helps if you apply Early Action. UMich has a lot of sibling attendees, even from OOS. Apply by the EA deadline and make sure you have indicated in your essay that you have been to the campus and love it.
My son is a freshman now who has a sibling that just graduated, OOS and a 33 ACT.
I believe the legacy helped as UMich knows a legacy is more likely to attend. They seem to be focused on continuing to improve their yield and it is working.
Definitely apply EA
