University of Michigan Ann Arbor Umich Transfer Winter 2018

Hi all,

I will be a junior this fall at UM-Dearborn. I am looking to transfer to UM-Ann Arbor for winter 2018. (Second semester of my junior year)

I have a 3.98 GPA
I also have a lot of credits, almost 70 credits that will transfer… is there such thing as too many to be able to transfer? (I am aware I can only transfer 60 credits and I am okay with that.
I had gotten in for Fall 2016 but couldn’t attend due to financial reasons

I am reapplying for Winter 2018 and just wanted to know whether they would disqualify me for having that many.

I don’t think so, they will probably just cap the number which you can transfer, and/or require that you still complete at least a certain number of credits in residence at UM-Ann Arbor before you can graduate.

You need to complete 60 credits in Ann Arbor, but the fact that you completed 70 credits in Dearborn should not pose a problem.

Thanks, guys! @Alexandre and @umcoe16

I know LSA has certain requirements to transfer including a foreign language as something they do like to see. Does it hurt if you haven’t taken a foreign language in college but you did back in high school (4 years).

Are you proficient in a foreign language?

@Alexandre Yes, I am proficient in three additional languages besides English. I just did not take a foreign language in my two years of college.

Back in my day, students could be exempt from the Foreign Language requirement by taking a test at the University. I am not sure if that is still the case. Can anybody confirm if one can test out of the Foreign Language requirement?

@Alexandre So I confirmed with the University. They do still allow placement exams once you have been admitted.

Well then, if you speak one of those languages proficiently, you need not worry!

@Alexandre Would it be necessary to somehow let college admissions know? Because I don’t know how else they would know that I am planning to take a placement exam for a foreign language.

I would definitely communicate it to admissions. First in the Common App, then directly by sending an email to the admissions officer responsible for your application.

@Alexandre Thanks for the advice. I am only able to get in contact with a transfer admissions counselor not officer. How would I get in contact with an officer or admissions official?

So I have one W in my first 400 level course at UM-Dearborn… I’m trying to transfer to LSA for winter 2018 as a junior with a 3.98 gpa currently. How bad will this one W hurt my application and do I have to explain it in the additional information section, any tips?

Anyone know how UofM looks at transfer students with Ws… not that I have many, I only have one.

My justification is an impromptu international trip to India for two weeks… legit or no?

Idk, but here at UM-Ann Arbor, advisors typically say that one or two W’s can be overlooked. Three or more is when you would need to have some legitimate explanation. This is what they tell those who plan to apply to graduate and/or professional schools. For transfer applicants, I’m not sure if this same idea holds, but I do not believe one W should be a deal breaker.

If you feel that you can explain it well, then by all means go ahead and explain it in the additional information section. Was it for a reason like a family emergency? Hopefully you did not just go on vacation?

@umcoe16 Okay that makes sense. No, actually I work with a developing Girls Tech/Educational Institute in India and there was an event that the girls planned for their international mentors that semester— I didn’t want to miss it for the life of me. It was the first time they were holding a conference per say. And so I had to leave to India for one week, I only went for like 6 days total, but it still screwed up the first and only 400 level course I took. Not sure how bad that will look either.
